what's a large flat shooting calibre?

375 Wby and 270 grain spitzers at 3000 fps?
I own a pair of 375 Wby's and neither can get close to 3000fps...More like 2800-2850.

If you really are loading 3000fps sooner or later your rifle will turn into a pipe bomb.

Not trying to rain on your parade, just trying to save your life dude.

FWIW with the right load the 375 Ultra can make 3000fps.

After checking my records, I am most humbly and thoroughly chastised!

Velocity was 2970 with the 270 Hornadys in my BRNO. The 24" rifles get 2850 with the Hornadys.

Perhaps it was an unusaully fast barrel. It was rechambered by Bevan King and had the standard Wby freebore, which is more than .700 inch.

Still pretty impressive. What other powders have you used? I would think Norma 204 is a bit hard to find.

Got it at Russells a while back. Also used IMR 4350, easily reached 2900 with four grains less powder, but primer pockets loosened up after five rounds.

Norma 204 is the stuff. It is exceptional in the 300 Win Mag, too. Someone must have that in Calgary.

I originally used standard 375 H&H brass, but it is a bit short after fireforming. Switched to 416 Rem brass about ten years ago. Sized until the bolt just closes nicely on the case, it ends up almost exactly the correct length.

How easy is 375 WBY brass to come by these days?

Just fireform H&H brass. Works for me.

That is one more thing about the 375 Wby; in a pinch you can use factory 375 H&H ammo. Headspace is controlled by the belt, and in the rifles I am familiar with the point of impact does not change much at 100 yd. Never tried H&H at longer ranges in my 375 Wby.

H-414 gets me to around 2850fps in both of my rifles.
My buddies Sako runs just over 2800fps.

FWIW all three rifles shoot best at 2750fps with H-4831, H-414,H-4350 , Rl-15 or Rl-19.

Without question the .375 Ultra will reach out there, but due to the restrictions of a 2X EER scope I have not shot mine beyond a quarter mile. It will shoot as flat as a .300 Winchester with the same bullet style and do more when it gets there. Clearly though when loaded with VLD and ULD bullets or even when loaded with standard match bullets, the various .300 magnums and super magnums will reach out beyond the range of rounds loaded with big game bullets.

Yes errr....Mine is actually outfitted with a 2-10X32 Nightforce. Most people think I am mentally challenged when I mention my 375 Ultra project.

I plan to test it at 600 and 800 yards in the next few weeks. I also had a Holland QD brake fitted to it for the extended prone sessions....Should be fun!

Not sure how well the big hunting bullets will hold their long range accuracy. We shall see.

308 for the closer range (800m and less)
and for the WT heck I like 45ACP or even Long Colt

Really I use 7mmRM and 308, as well as 303 British...all handloads..well everything I shoot is a handload. I hate paying the high prices and pissing with consistency.

I am looking at building a custom..Not sure what yet, next year there will be a new wildcat and action, so why not wait a bit..:D

If you can find a good custom bullet maker, I'm sure you could double that range. Sounds like a fun project!

If it shoots well enough I have a "field range" with gongs set up to just under 2000 yards. I have a picatinny rail on the rifle so I could drop on one of my larger Nightforce scopes.

Wildcat has the perfect (350gr)bullets for the task, but delivery seems to be an issue. Sierra reportedly has 350gr bullets in development, but nothing seems to be available yet.
Any other ideas?

Thanks Camp

I saw mention of this bullet somewhere else and did some looking around...No success.

The Sierra 300gr GK showed some long range promise by making a very small group at 200 yards during a ladder test with H-1000, but is not the best hunting bullet at 375 Ultra velocities.
Might be the best long range play bullet.

Though not my first choice (up close) so far the 260 NAB seems to be the best all around long range and hunting bullet. I hear they will be making a 300gr version????

Will try the 300TSX at long range, but I don't expect great (consistent) accuracy results.

I just sent an e-mail to Barnes asking availability of these bullets I'm thinking that they could work very well in my project 375RUM.

I've just worked up a load with the 300gr AB bullet in my .375 Ruger. Just like the 260AB and 270gr TSX, the 300gr AB was easy to work with.

I put a 260 AB lengthwise through a 5 1/2 ft black bear at close range. SC didn't get great penetration with it on a moose...
