What's better than a 10/22?

I, like so many others haven't had problems with my stock 10?22. I will say that it probably only has about 1000 rounds through it, which isn't much for a semi auto .22.

When I read this thread yesterday I had to agree that the trigger is terrible, and the accuracy is nothing to write home about, but, about what I'd expect for a semi auto .22. So off to rimfirecentral I go and about a half hour later I have enough information to make the thing work better. For free. Just a little elbow grease.

So I follow the pictures and shine up the trigger parts. I have to say, WOW! The bolt now cycles smooth as a jeweled bolt gun. All this for a half hour and limited knowledge.(an hour of time combined with looking up the information)

Not bad for a $299 gun. You could spend more, but why? I think this thing serves its purpose well. I'd consider this a value for the money.

My stock brand new 10/22 is a piece of sh!t. Try a Marlin 795 for $169 at wholesale sports.

Hell, my ancient Nylon 66 is vastly superior to that POS 10/22.

^^^Seriously, though. The Marlin's straight removable magazine is mechanically simpler and easier to clean. The receiver is already dove-tailed. The bolt has an auto-hold back on empty which requires a mod on the 10/22. The stock has sling mounts which therefore allow the easy use of a bipod (not to mention sling), the extractor actually works, and every review seems to indicate it's more accurate out of the box.

Why would people pay $100 more for the ruger? Because there are more accesories available for their barbie doll gun?

I'm wondering if maybe 10/22s have become worse over the years. I have two (one blued, one stainless, neither modified in any way) that have never given a moments trouble, and are commendably accurate - but both are close to 30 years old. Even the factory triggers are quite acceptable - not bench rest quality maybe, but pretty darn good.

I don't recall EVER having a FTF or FTE with either one, with any kind of ammo. About all the babying they get is a good blast of Gun Scrubber once or twice a year if they're lucky. The rest of the time they just keep on popping squirrels and gophers....I have fancier .22s, like Anschutz and Brnos, but I sure can't find fault with the 10/22s in any respect. On the other hand, I've had a couple of Marlins - both lever and autoloader - that didn't shoot worth a damn.

You want genuine, bona fide blue ribbon JUNK? Buy an AR-7. Their best application is if you poke a piece of twisted haywire up the spout and use it for a wiener stick.

Ship it to Ruger! I owned one for 20 years they are "Absolutely Fabulous". I like the Marlins too but i think their mags are inferior. And God knows magazine functions are very important to a repeating firearms.

I have a 795. My buddy has a 10 22. He put $300 into his 10 22. I put $80 into my 795. His cost him $550. Mine cost me $250. I can hit targets at 200 yards. He cant hit targets at 75, unless he uses my gun. :) What's better than a 10 22? Everything.

Anyone out there with a T/C R-55 Benchmark? I'd like to hear if the rifle lives up to the claims. I was considering buying one, but Cabella's suddenly upped the price by over a $100 and I went decked out 10/22 instead.

I had a TC Benchmark about 1 1/2 yrs ago ....shot it one summer and sold it to a buddy because I didn't like the trigger creep. Now, I wish i had kept it! It shot fairly consistent 1/2" (5 shot) groups @ 50M off bags using a 12X scope. Like other rimfires, it had "preferences", mine liked Federal GameShock. I never tried any of the high end stuff like Black Box Eley. It met my accuracy expectations for a semi, but the trigger had creep and i could find no one in Canada to work on it. TC will not sell trigger parts so if you bugger it, you have to return it to TC and pay for the replacement. With hindsight, i could have just sent the trigger group to a US shop for "warranty" adjustment.
I was going to buy a TC Sporter with the laminated stock, but I have pretty much decided on a Volquartsen....Not sure if i will buy the whole rifle, or just get the VQ action and build one...maybe with a Shillen barrel.

:bsFlag: The only way I'd see this being true is if he shot his with no sights, and you bought a scope. Can't hit targets at 75 yards.... f:P:

H:S:

What did he use is 300 dollars of upgrades on; a reese hitch?? Must be one small target he cant hit from 75yds and i doubt if your 150 dollar marlin will consistently hit the same little target at 200yds, even with a marksman like yourself at the Helm! Again doesn't sound like a very controlled unbiased side by side comparison. What is the 10/22 unable to hit at 75 and you consistently ringing at 600 feet?

Honestly I don't know much about other .22s but my dad has an old winchester with a tube mag that works great. I had a Lakefield that was so bad i took it in to be destroyed. I really like my 10/22.

What's better than a chevy? :D

pros of buying a chevy:

-Everything just bolts right in!
-Every cool kids in town has one.

cons:

-Face it, you'll never be as cool as your nextdoor neighbour with the new ram 1500 R/T. :p

marlin 60 or a winchester 190 (or 290).

only thing my 190 wont cycle from the tube mag is CCI CB shorts. eats everything else, shorts, long, long rifle, high velocity, low velocity.

the marlin is still made and readily availible, the winchester is out of production, but easily found used for less than 150 bucks.
