What's better than a 10/22?

I have a Remington 597 stock. I got it, loved it. Loved the fit, loved the feel. I thought it was a bit of a pain to clean, but that's because I'm one of those guys that takes apart every last screw. I put about 3,000 rnds through it. The weirdest thing about it, was that it was more accurate warm than cold. I HATED the magazines though.

Then I tried a Savage Mark II TRR and I went out and bought that. I really needed to slow down my shooting. The accuracy was so much better, but it's not fair to compare the two as the Savage has the heavy fluted barrel etc etc. I never use the 597 anymore.

Marlin 795

Marlin 795, fits your needs, I have one it has over 500 rounds through it, only 1 FTE other than that it only stopped for dud ammo. It is far more accurate than the 10/22 and considerably cheaper.

This is what I have. Much better for the price. More accurate when compared to stock 10/22 + having a last shot bolt hold open is nice and prevents dry firing your rimfire (especially when others use it). Also, I hate the barrel bands and the fact that the basic ruger has a Barrel band. It cheapens the whole thing and I dont trust the accuracy especially when a 10/22 isnt really cheap. There is no excuse on the price.

With rimfire, Ruger will always be my choice for pistols. For rifles I look elsewhere.

What's better than a 10/22?

NOTHING

+1 -I have had 2 Remingtons, the basic 597 and then the 597 VTR - should of learned my lesson after the first one...........Now i have the SR22 and absolutely no regrets.

BcBoy on here posted some function tests for both the VTR and SR22 and both performed flawlessy. My Remys must have been built on a Friday before a long weekend.

Honestly I don't know much about other .22s but my dad has an old winchester with a tube mag that works great. I had a Lakefield that was so bad i took it in to be destroyed. I really like my 10/22.

Now thats nice! I really like your 10/22 to!

My experience is very different from yours. Be prepared to put in a new extractor because it won't run without it! If you are one of those people who expect something brand-new to work properly then don't bother buying a 10/22.

Agreed, i installed a Volqustern extractor in mine (i think it was $11 from rimfire sports shipped).....HUGE difference and super easy to install

Anyone out there with a T/C R-55 Benchmark? I'd like to hear if the rifle lives up to the claims. I was considering buying one, but Cabella's suddenly upped the price by over a $100 and I went decked out 10/22 instead.

I own a R-55 Benchmark. Very well built and very accurate. I bought it for long range .22 shooting. It groups sub MOA at 100 and around 5' at 200 yard with target ammo.

However, my other 22, a Marlin 60 basically goes toe-to-toe with my R-55 in accuracy and reliability ($180 vs. $700). go figure! Two different class of semi .22 rifles, but both will shave circles around any 10/22.

Just amazed at the inherent accuracy of Marlin 60 design.

one of the guys i shoot with, had some SERIOUS issues with his 597 VTR last week, he had a round go off before the action was alway the way closed !!!!....left some brass jammed in the barrel, some flew out !, he's had nothing but problems with this rifle !!..but yet another guy i shoot with loves his !

hey guys i have a marlin papoose and a ruger 10/22 with inexpensive scopes on them. they are both tack drivers at 50yds and pretty good for 22s at 100 as well. I like the 25 round clips for the ruger, with the loader, its fun. The compact size of the papoose is good for camping or hiking. Both worth the 300 bucks each, lots of ammo have gone thru these two semi-autos, no problemo. I just keep em clean. Ive seen and shot alot of different 22s at the club, everyone has there own flavour, its hard to beat the 22s fun factor and economy.

You have had your Marlin 60 side by side with same optics and ammo type, and done an unbiased comparison against a stock 10/22? Can you show pics of the targets? The Marlin is a nice rifle and i'm sure it is as accurate as a 10/22 but far outclassing itH:S:, will, I need to see an unbiased comparison of apples to apples.

The 'stock' 10/22 is indeed a nail, but it is still fun to shoot.

A modified 10/22 could be one of the most fun rifles you'll ever own! And you do not have to spend a ton of money on it to make it so. Dlask Barrel $170, Houge Stock $100 + bits ($100) makes it really good.

Freedom of choice is what make's it so popular, it can be almost anything you want to be. I have a Sako Quad as well, but the Ruger gets the most use!

Candocad.

My model 60 with a 4x bushnell scope will put 'em under .5" all day long at 50m. I have NEVER seen a semi shoot this accurately out of the box for under $600... totally blown away by it's accuracy and reliability.
I don't have a 10/22 to compare it to, but I don't want one either. I've handled and shot one numerous times, and I can tell you the stock 10/22 does not even come close to my 60ss.
