What's better than a 10/22?

My experience is very different from yours. Be prepared to put in a new extractor because it won't run without it! If you are one of those people who expect something brand-new to work properly then don't bother buying a 10/22.

X2. I should have bought a Marlin.

I had one that shot great as well, but I sold it because.......TUBE MAGS SUCK!!!:nest:

My Bro's Marlin 70 is the same as a 60 but takes, mags. We all pitched in for Xmas present about 20 years ago...It's a fantastic rifle too. Mags are handy to keep loaded and, pop in at will, no question. In all fairness, I wouldn't race loading the 7 shot mag against someone dropping 12 (14?) down the tube!

You can't lose a tube either. Making them "Camster-proof".
I adore my 64's but, would like a Marlin semi in the safe.

Lol, to each their own... but as was said, box mags only have an advantage if you have A LOT of them, and you aren't prone to losing them.

Also, when the damn globalists finally work out the kinks of the North American Union and we merge with the US... :nest:, all the evidence suggests that every semi automatic with a detachable box mag, regardless of caliber will be classified as a restricted firearm.

But hey... im a PCT who believes that the US gov passing a bill this morning to give the president the ability to shut down internet and cell communication in the event of a disaster... is not in the public's best interest.

My model 60 with a 4x bushnell scope will put 'em under .5" all day long at 50m. I have NEVER seen a semi shoot this accurately out of the box for under $600... totally blown away by it's accuracy and reliability.
I don't have a 10/22 to compare it to, but I don't want one either. I've handled and shot one numerous times, and I can tell you the stock 10/22 does not even come close to my 60ss.

Could you borrow or maybe compare at the range against a 10/22, same ammo optics, bench rest etc etc.

Just to see what they do at 50 as well.

Good Idea

I'd love to see a few Brand New rifles go toe to toe with each other...
Marlin (795?), Mossberg Plinkster, Savage 64(my personal foav) and, of course, the ruger 10/22...

Someone(or someones) who can shoot consistently (not me...too bad!) with a few different flavours of ammo. Pit them against each other right out of the box...see what's what.

Yes would be interesting for sure.

I dont have a stock 10/22 but I can tell you I've never had a bone stock one shoot under a inch at 50yds consistently. I think this is what drives the upgrades most people do, and the fact that its so simple to do that anyone can do it doesnt hurt the matter any.

I'm not sure about being better than a Ruger 10-22, but the Marlin model 70 is just as reliable and accurate, but thinner in width than the 10-22. It's a handy little 22 rifle.

I have the marlin 795 basically but in a 17mach2. Discontinued but wow, I have never had it fail to fire, eject or stove pipe. Fired a couple of cases now. I do keep the chamber clean but only because I am worried about the "out of battery" complaint that supposedly forced marlin to discontinue the gun. A bore snake a couple of times after 200 rounds is good enough.

Whats better than a stock 10/22?

Well... Marlin 795/60, Savage MKII/I, CZ 452/455, Anything BRNO, Nerf vulcan, Gevarm, Browning, Remington 597, Mossberg plinkster, cooey 60/75/82, lakefield, H&R single shots, thompson center hotshot... etc. etc.

That a pretty broad statement. Mine has never gave me a problem.

edit.. Didn't realize the thread was so long, and so many 10/22 haters. Works great for me.

:D

I'm with you there, though I disagree about the Mossberg. I'd put a stock 10/22 just above it because the action and magazine system are quite good.

When you boil it down; a stock, bare-bones 10/22 costs the same price as a stainless+laminate stocked Marlin 60, but has the barrel and trigger of a rifle worth a third as much and the accuracy to go with it. One can tool up a 10/22 very easily, and if you sink enough money into it you can get a good-shooting semi that can almost but not quite match a CZ Brno rifle... yet still manage to cost some $200-$400 more than one after all is said and done.

The 10/22 always struck me as the rifle version of the Nigerian scam... or a pyramid scheme.

Mine was terrible. I bought a savage (cooey) at it jammmed every 2nd shot so I returned it to WSS and got a 10/22. It jammed a couple of times every clip. So I traded it to a guy that was going to put new parts into it. I got a Marlin 60 now and it has never had a jam. Ever since I got it.

In my experience, the Marlin 60 and Remington 597 are both VASTLY superior to the 10/22 in function (automatic bolt hold open, better release), reliability, and accuracy.

Looks like you are looking for a rifle like the MARLIN 60 (if tube mags interest you) or perhaps the Marlin 795.

No offense, but the 10/22 is legendary???

This is an old thread... so the OP has probably checked out a long time ago... his original question was about alternative "out-of-the-box" choices... I am a 10/22 fan... but I have never purchased one without fully intending to modify the crap out of it... for a number of years I just build 10/22 variants with complete aftermarket parts... starting with an aftermarket receiver... so while it may be "10/22-like" it is not a 10/22... But I am very thankful for the commitment Ruger made to manufacturing and promoting the 10/22.

Let the haters be haters.......
There is NO OTHER rimfire rifle on the market that allows you to customize like the 10/22 does.
All the others are a basic cookie cut with very few exceptions.
The 10/22 lets you make the rifle distinctly yours. The way it looks, the way it feels & the way it shoots.
I first learned about completely tearing down and put back together a rifle on a 10/22. It gave me the confidence to learn and try to do the same on all my "other" firearms.
Go ahead and vent, but over 8 million people worldwide may feel differently.

11 Million Marlin Model 60s sold also tells a tale, namely that being able to staple bells, whistles and other nonsense to a gun just isn't quite as appealing as having a rifle that shoots straighter than one that costs 3 times as much.

Nonsence??? Go tell that to the AR15 crowd! Laugh2

If it's not your type of rifle, your money or your thing, why do you find it necessary to vent your petty jealousies?
