What's better then a Remington 700 SPS Tactical

The Rem is best if you plan to upgrade.
I think if you were going to buy a rifle and shoot it as is the Tikka CTR is a better buy.

Tikkas are dropping in price or the rems are increasing.
At the same price I’d choose a Tikka.

Better yet a Mack bro action and custom prefit wouldn’t cost a whole lot more.

Once I have a Remmy finally done I prefer the ergonomics over a T3 however it is a pain to get the bolt handle milled/threaded, trigger changed and awkward pica rail fitting. Change a barrel and the bedding needs to be re-done on a remmy not on a T3. I have a few Remmies and a few T3's, all have aftermarket stocks.

Nothing wrong with a 700. Most of them shoot fine out of the box and they have by far the most available accessories available, most common inlet, etc. As your skills and experience with the platform grow, you'll be able to try different chassis/stocks, triggers, etc and figure out exactly what you like. If/when you shoot out the barrel (or just want a different caliber) you can get it re-barrelled.

This….

Same advice I pass on to all my PR (Sniper Match) clients/ shooters/competitors. Start at this modest level and grow your game. Learn and progress. Develop your: skills, loads, experience, wind reading ability, shooting fundamentals with the factory barrel. Learn to reload along the journey.

Ensure you don’t label that rifle platform as the destination…. That usually never ends well. Just ask the Meaford Long Range Steel Challenge shooters who turn up at Base Meaford (I’m the Reception Volunteer) and they have never shot any of the NSCC or DCRA or PRA (National Service Conditions Championship, Dominion of Canada Rifle Association, Provincial Rifle Association) matches at known distance (KD) ranges under structured matches/stress/intensity.

Ringing steel in some random cut line and unknown distances is undoubtedly fun, but your experience set will be sorely lacking when you arrive at your squadding area and my shooting station called, “Tank Trap.” In Meaford, ON MLRSC.

Learn, grow, develop, progress your own self along with the cheaper M700 SPS line. Then as time goes by, grow your platform and ammunition repertoire.

My matches are full of anecdotal funny stories …. Don’t be THAT guy! :nest:

Be the guy with the quiet confidence!!
And also the ugliest paint job on a custom barreled Remmy 700 receiver. H aha ha ha ha ha. :D

It’s about the journey and not the destination!!

Cheers, Barney

I'm in the same boat (a few Rems and a few Tikkas), and tend to agree that once they are both set up "how I like" my preference tends to lean towards the Remington, but the biggest problem I see for new Remingtons is the price. Looks like new SPS Tacticals are running about $1,400, which is the same as a Bergara B14 Ridge. $250 more gets you a B14 HMR with a fully-adjustable mini-chassis which is very popular in the long range world for people just getting into it.

These days I have BOTH the M700 in a .223 9” twist factory barrel…

AND

A Bergara B14 HMR in .22-250 that just loves the 75 grain HPBT booolits

I’m loving the B14 because THAT rig is what Remmy M700 Shoulda been.

Mind you what’s really cool about attending matches, one gets to see all kinds of interesting and successfully great shooting rigs that have evolved. Savage 110 and FP10 come to mind. Tikka T3 rifles always shoot and develop well. I love and respect these brands because my clients are so confident to show me their upgrades and afterwards; their score cards!

Here’s the .223 Remmy M700 that’s sitting inside the B14 HMR chassis/stock. I love this stock. This .223 is my personal trainer and also client shooter.

Next picture is my Bergara B14 HMR in .22-250 with a 9” twist barrel. I’m really impressed with it. Currently the HMR is sitting in my beloved KRG X Ray chassis….

The score card really is the best way to judge a lot of precision gear, consistency over the entire course of fire is the most important! I mean, I still shoot for tiny groups but I'll take an easy three-quarter-minute-all-day gun over a finicky quarter-minute gun anytime, unless I'm posting groups here :)

The Weatherby vanguard line is worth looking at.

What's your experience been using the Vanguard for range shooting? Looking to pick up a Howa/Weatherby, and there's a real nice looking Vanguard with a "sporter" barrel but I'm not sure how well that would maintain accuracy once it starts to heat up. Not many options for a Howa/Weatherby in a heavy barrel.

Not really sure about shooting lot's of rds at the range.
Everyone I have had shot very well but I am more of a hunting guy than paper puncher
