Today is the day of our annual Hunter's Rendezvous where a number of good friends join us in celebrating the hunting season past. One of the highlights of the day is having everyone share what gear worked well for them in 2008 and what didn't. Any new gear you tried this year that worked great? Any that didn't?

130gr TTSX bullets @ 3500 FPS from my 300WSM worked very well.

Sitka underclothes worked like poly pro underwear but didn't stink as bad.

Mystery Ranch packed worked very well

Kifaru gun bearer worked well

New Ghroman Knife was good.

Geovids were great. I was looking for quality as well as convenience of not having to carry both a range finder and bino's. I definitely got what I was looking for.

I used my Bushnell Elite 8x42 bino's for the first time hunting this year and they were awesome. Also tried my new Sorel snow boots too. They were great while hunting, though a little loud. However my feet were cold this Morning digging our place, my Neighbors place and my parents place out. Better invest in some more Smartwool I guess, which by the way aren't new to me but are fugging awesome socks.

Eberlestock J104 worked great, love this pack.

Strongbuilt Comanche Cable Climbing tree stand also did the trick. A little bit heavy, but it didn't cost a whole lot either (but I am a real lightweight and I enjoy heights, so take that with a grain of salt).

Remington buckhammers, hit hard on both ends.

Remington copper solids, soft recoil, minimal expansion but in the end did the trick.

Redhead XPR Series Gore-tex Camo rain pants got them for $24.94 USD off the bass-pro website, normally $79.95 USD. I have only had the chance to wear them once, but I stayed dry underneath them, and worked up a bit of a sweat. If I make another order from bass-pro I will get another pair (last I checked they were still on clearance).

Beartooth products slip-on recoil pad and comb height raising kit, went on a youth model 870 with a cantilever barrel. Not something that would be great for high volume shooting, but it did the trick for sure. The comb height adjustment was surprisingly secure.

Primos vision blind broke when it was set outside and a heavy wet snow fell on it. Took it back and got a replacement that worked well, but didn't get exposed to the snow that the first one did. Good blind, just know its limitations.

Gatehouse, what did you think of the Mystery Ranch pack?

Maddtrapper, good to hear the butt plug worked well on the guys in camp, how did it work on the deer??

It is a plastic tool designed to be used in preparing the deers arse when gutting it. You just push in in turn it and pull it out. Then all you do is tie off the intestine and cut it off. When removing the guts the tied end pulls back through the deer without spilling it contents... Saves the old reaming and trying to pull it out with your fingers and tying.

regards, Darryl

I bought a Primos fanny pac,the type with shoulder straps,BIG improvement over my old waist strap only style.Large main storage, very comfortable, doesn't slip down over yer ass all day while stillhunting,GPS case, lure pouch, compass clip, drink holders, external straps held my rattling antlers secure and outta the way....great peice of gear for the hunter on the move.

Uninsulated Ecco Hikers even when the weather is -13 with a few inches of snow on the ground.

Goretex, lightweight flexible boot is a beautiful thing, even in early winter in Northern Alberta.

I would just love to find a pair of boots high enough so I will not get wet feet crossing a creek.? Like the original nokian's, not the after market junk?

The only thing new I tried this year where the Barnes TTSX's, and Cabelas wool whipcords. The bullets worked as advertised on 5 head of game and I'm quite fond of the whipcords.

Hot or not

TC Prohunter (1st time out) 7mm-08 smoked a moose...139 Hornady Interbonds are a pleasure to use...

Bogpods are versatile and easy to use and make great walking sticks, but can be cumbersome for a belly crawl stalk...

PSE X-Force 6...awesome...need I say more...

come to think of it everything we used worked very well this year...Merry Christmas to everyone...

What's not hot. IMR 4227 powder in my savage inline. Two miss fires. One at a doe, another at a 5X5:mad:

Good thing I had pyrodex at home otherwise no venison for me.
