What's keeping you out of Service Rifle?

The full SR courses of fire require a range going back to 500, with butts for the target pullers. There are only a few such ranges available. There also has to be an active organizing group. There are some of these in different parts of the country, but certainly not everywhere.
There is also the option of SR CQB. This requires a much shorter range. Any range with 50y, and without a fixed firing point would work. The CQB seems to be growing much faster than SR.
Probably the best rifle for SR is an AR type with an adjustable optical sight. Repeatable adjustments are helpful. Fullblown tackiekewl goodness is not necessary.
It would help a beginner to have a look at the course of fire for the different matches. For the DCRA matches used for national competition at Connaught and at some other ranges, go to www.dcra.ca. The entire, detailed rulebook is there. I cannot help with a rulebook with detailed descriptions of the course of fire for CQB or the CAFSAC style matches. I am sure that there are those on this site who could help with these.

Get some stripper clips and you are set.

I have seen stock Sks at Service rifle match

According to BCRA "The rifle must be equipped with a magazine and a spare for compulsory magazine changes during the match."

Which would exclude my SKS with stripper clips. If they do allow SKS and other stripper-clip fed internal magazine rifles, then the BCRA website needs changin'.

For me it is simply time. I'd rather spend the time hunting, hiking, shooting other things or taking my SR type firearm (Non Restricted) out to the farm field with my pals (multiple farms among us) for friendly competition.

No SR in Alberta.

Not in Edson. I know Genessee was trying for the full SR 500m shoots and Spruce Grove was trying to do a "short course" with 300m. I am not sure if they still are, as I am not as active in those ranges this year due to hectic work schedule.

You can shoot the matches with a single shot rifle if so inclined. This is just really poorly written way to say you can't use magazines containing more than 5 rounds. Oh yes it needs some changing.

For what it's worth, the number of responses here in less than 24 hours is encouraging, for a usually quiet forum.

In terms of exposure, I think it says something that our sticky thread for new shooters was started in 2005, and the last post is more than a year old. That's not meant to diminish the effort, but it says something.

I'd thought of doing some sort of shooting journal/blog, documenting my SR learning curve. It quickly fell by the wayside as I realized it was all I could do to make the time to practice (very little!) and attend a few matches this summer.

I've only just started shooting SR, but I love it so much. I haven't even tried CQB yet, and those guys sound addicted to that format! :)

Ya, I shot those matches last year at SG. That range is a joke. The CFO is a joke. The APRA is a joke. That's why I spend my money on a BCRA membership, and many thousands of other dollars in BC when I go there. Can you do run downs at Genesee? Also, doing 300m standing is not SR. Scott had some weird COFs.

You can use a tactical 10/22 that has been pimped out as this is considerably cheaper to shoot. The classes do permit these.

Where can you use a .22 for SR? Good luck at 1-500m. I've also never seen a rimfire allowed for CQB. It'd be cool though. Longshot should put on a .22 LR CQB match.

We have been running a shortened version of the DCRA service rifle match for about 22 years now. First at the Edmonton Fish and Game range which was north of St Albert, then at Spruce Grove. Now we are, and have been for 2 years, running matches at the Canadian Historical Arms Society range by the Genessee power plant.

Due to CFO interference we only managed 3 matches last year (2015) but we should have our full slate of 9 matches for next year. See the schedule below.
I have not put this on CHAS's calendar but it should be there and on the facebook page in a month or so.

Fee's as stated are $5.00 for CHAS members and $ 25.00 for non members.

Are they deliberate, snap, rapid matches? Pronefrom 5-300, sitting, kneeling, standing at 200&100? Thanks for the dates Scott.

I wanted to do a similar thing; but man, life sure does get in the way lol. I usually get time in the spring and fall, but it is work that usually keeps me away from attending more than the 1-2 matches I can make it to. I have been lucky enough to make it to at least one clinic for the past 4years.
Lots of fun though!
