What's that smell?

Seems like all of the ammo types with the gooey lube have a different smell. Reminds me of burnt wax. Might actually BE burnt wax? SK Rifle Match falls into that category. Never bothers me, but I sometimes feel like taking a clean rag to that stuff before using it. lol (never do)

Turns out, Eley and RWS are the only better quality ammo readily available, by the box, in my area.

I may just end up sucking it up and adapt to Eley's unique smell.

Thanks to everyone who pitched in with ideas and suggestions. I really appreciate it!

The smell of burnt powder equates to the taste of Scotch whiskey.
It is not something people notice when mixed with Coke of Sprite.
The smell of fresh cut hay and flowers affect different people differently.
How long before California requires Eley to brand their products as possible carcinogens?
Smell the roses and not the powder for fear the enemies in Ottawa come up with something else to ban.
As a Clinton afterthought . . . smell the powder but do not inhale!

I used some of the black case stuff not long ago can't for the life of me remember what it's called. It had a off smell to it shot like a dream tho

Attach a battery power fan to blow the smell away from you when you shoot. Or you can put a cup of gear oil next to you and nothing else will bother you

Well. I'll need a pic rail for that fan. And a second for spare batteries. :) And a third rail for the small pan holding gear oil. ;)

And I suppose, I could use Hoppe's #9 for aftershave - as backup.

I use the Eley hollow-points (sub-sonic and high velocity), and yeah they don't smell nice at all.

But the accuracy and hollow-point expansion are excellent. I only use it (and only it) in my dedicated hunting rifle, not for plinking, so I can live with it.

Although I don't have a dedicated hunting rifle, I'll likely do something similar. Use my normal ammo for training, and the good stuff for hunting or any other time I'm going for the best accuracy. I'll usually shoot around 150 rounds a session, so that amounts to about a $15 savings.

That is, if the flyers don't get to me. I suppose I could just discount them, but that kinda feels like cheating.

Do other folks ignore flyers, assuming it's the ammunition's fault?

Hmmmm...am I the only one that really likes the smell from Eley and most Aguila primer compound? It is definitely noticeable, but I find it pleasant.

I just make sure to clean then season the barrel with the Eleys during sight-in before hunting with it. I don't fire other ammo through it until after the hunting season.

Flyers can make the difference between a miss/bad hit and a good clean shot when hunting small game, so I don't ignore them for hunting rifles and ammo. One of the reasons I use Eley is flyers are rare (and probably my fault) -- great consistency between rounds.

Great point, and good advice on seasoning the barrel with Eley, and only using that ammo in-season. It's the CCI flyers that are driving me to find more consistent ammo. As you point out about a bad hit on game, I never want to get into that situation.

As an aside: I had a little debate with a (non-hunting) friend. He was saying how he felt that hunters have a larger moral issue than people who only buy their meat in a store. Honestly, I thought he was off his rocker on that one. First of all, he's only outsourcing the moral responsibility one takes on when eating meat. Secondly, I don't understand how someone can discount the conditions livestock experience when being raised on an industrial scale. And I'm willing to bet the vast majority of store bought meat is raised using industrial practices.

Personally, I buy meat at the store too. But I don't have any illusions about that - if I am eating meat, an animal had to give its life. Period.

If you want to try some better ammo without buying a brick, I suggest contacting Asmir at Tesro. He’s in Ottawa and offers different levels of sampler packs with various brands and price levels. Get to try all the flavours

I've posted this before, but when I got my Anschutz 64, I tried to go on practice shooting with ordinary .22 bulk ammo, intending to save the better quality stuff for when I was shooting that particular rifle well. That plan was defeated, however, because the tight tolerances of the Anschutz meant that the rather carelessly produced brass on the 333 or whatever meant that the cases would not always extract after firing and I found myself tapping them out with a cleaning rod 'way too often. Experienced .22 precision shooters soon set me right. There are less expensive brands that will shoot in my rifle just fine and I don't have to buy Tenex for practice sessions- just when I want to shoot to my full potential, such as it is.

I get that. You put up with some inconvenience so you can shoot your best when it matters to you. I'm coming to the same conclusion.

Thanks, that's good advice. Aside from the special scent, I like the Eley Club and Sport I've tried so far. I may get a brick of the Eley sampler when it's back in stock. I'd be tempted to experiment with other brands, but Eley is available in three places nearby.

Used to love the smell of Remington yellow jacket 22 LR. I remember standing next to someone at our range many years ago . they were shooting an sks and I think the ammo was Czech or from Romania and it stunk . com block 762x39. nowadays if you go into a shop you buy what is available . they aren't shipping what they used to north of the border what used to be shipped here. I'd bet it is mostly because of what is going on in the Ukraine and our dollar is low because of who is in charge.
