If I ever decide to buy one of these, what is the best bang for the buck in this price range?

The Springfield Armory Mil-spec (not GI) stainless is under $1000 and has modern sights and flared ejection port.
I don't own one but it LOOKS nice.

I'd vote Springfield mil-spec, too. 'Course you could almost get a pair of tuned Norc's from Armco for $1,000 taxes & shipping in...:p

But just how good would the Norc be? I would prefer quality over quantity.

How about an Armsco tuned Norc 1911 for $450? Throw in a few cosmetic bits/sights, and quality mags for another $200.

Probably run better then many stock 1911's.

I started with a Norc frame. Changed just about everything to better aftermarket and have around $700 invested.

How about a Charles Daly? I held a target enhanced in stainless and it's got all the goodies for about $850.00. That said I bought a norc commander and absolutely love it. Think of all the extra ammo you could buy with the money left over.

I fondled a Kimber 22 today that looked like the Super Match 2. I didn't want to give it back. That was a seriously nice piece of work.

I liked the Para SSP enough to buy one. Others for under 1000.00 that I considered were some of the used Colts in the exchange forum, the Mil Spec Springer and even some of the Kimbers. I understand that the Norc's are very good for the money and is a solid base for customizing. For personal reasons, I won't buy a Norinco, but I do see them as a great value with good potential. My choice, my loss..........

I think I'm in love with the Kimber Tactical Custom 2 and the Eclipse Target 2. Way out of my price range right now though.
