Looking at trying precision shooting. Would appreciate advice on model. Don't want to spend too much cash in gun or ammo.

Can u recommend a good optic too please.

Tx

there is really no way to get into precision shooting for less than 2500 bucks id say,

you will need a good rifle rem 700 or savages are reasonably priced ($1000 +), a decent scope probably 700 to 1000 ish,

and the most important part Reloading Equipment another $500 or so

then all ur extras, sand bags or a bipod

just my 2 cents, for a beginner set-up

Ok after some thought ill play on this thread. First off you really should be more specific about the cash you have to spend, your experience level and what you wish to do with your "sniper" rifle.

I'm going to guess your new to shooting so go out and buy a bolt action .22 and shoot the piss out of it. The rifle and ammo will be cheap compared to a centerfire rig and you'll be able to get the fundamentals of marksmanship down pat while you save your pennies. Precision rifle shooting is a very expensive hobby, that's why I don't have one yet ;) The Remington 700 is a good choice if you like tacticool goodies

Ok, my turn. :D

Some people get bent when you use the term sniper rifle. It's because we are not snipers. I personally don't give a s**t.

Budget Precision Shooting 101

.223 is the most bang for the buck, pun intended.
Remington 700 Tactical, 20" barrel 1/9 twist >$700
Bushnell 3200 3.5-15x40 >$450
bipod, cleaning supplies, carry case , etc... >$200
Find a deal on 500 rounds of .223 and save the brass
Go shooting

Put a target up at 100yd and learn how to hit it precisely. Move to 200yd and start over, etc...
When you've acquired some brass, start shopping for a press. Learn to reload and get good at it.
Once you know how to reload, you're ready to upgrade the gun.
After all this is done, you'll be on your way to precision shooting.

The most important thing to remember is, a precision shooter with a beat up gun will outshoot a beginner shooter with $10,000 worth of gear.
Get it?

Gun and scope choices are examples only....

i second this idea, thats how i learned to shoot, bolt action .22 on the 50 yard range, find some ammo your rifle likes and shoot about 1000 rounds, try and get your group size down and consistency up

then when you switch to a .223 you will see the difference in accuracy

<rant on>

Well you should give a s**t.

You and every other person that calls a precision rifle, a sniper rifle, hands a huge prize over to all the gun control groups. You are doing their job for them.

Yes it is political correctness, and for a damn good reason.

Years of education and lobbying go up in smoke. Myself and others haven't spent years of our own time trying to protect OUR rights to enjoy shooting sports without extreme government control.

So, how many days a year do you give up fighting for your right to own your "sniper" rifles?

Now back to your regularly scheduled sniper rifle thread........

<rant off>

Oh and that's good advice.

There is also the Savage in 223 with a 7:1 twist barrel that will stabilize long/heavy bullets.

Pretty much the plan I'm following, except a few more dollars.
Just picked up a Rem 700 .223, but the XCR LR with a 26" 1/9 twist barrel
Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42
now looking for a bipod, rings and mount and carry case

I started with a remington 700 HB .223 in a mcmillan stock with weaver T10 because there are lots of shells around at reasonable prices. It is a good learning experience. I still have the same gun and went to remington 40x repeaters in 223 and 308 rifles in mcmillan stocks.

Rem 700 5r milspec :)
^Probably a good route to follow, if you don't want to purchase a Savage or Remington action and get a custom barrel put on it.
Budget for good optics and rings/bases:
-NF
-Sightron
or something of equal quality or better
Handload your own ammo to shoot more often and find the best bullet and powder combination for your needs.

You cannot buy a sniper rifle, you would have to be a sniper to own a sniper's rifle. :)

Precisely. A Sniper Rifle is only a Sniper Rifle when in the possession of a Sniper, thus it becomes a Sniper's Rifle. Once it leaves his or her possession, it is no longer a Sniper Rifle, and merely becomes a Precision Rifle (which in some cases is a very generous moniker).
