A:\ illegal to import into Canada
B:\illegal to possess and shoot in Canada
C:\grey area
D:\proven legal to possess and shoot in Canada, as long as i dont import it
E:\"legal" but unproven to possess and shoot in Canada

It's legal, and always has been.

There was a period in time where CBSA were in theory not allowing imports of handgun hollow point ammo, on the mistaken advice from NRCAN that the ammo was exploding. However, that didn't prevent the sale of ammo for pistol caliber rifles......

It has never been illegal to purchase, own or use hollow point pistol ammo in Canada.

IIRC it WAS illegal for an individual to import, but I believe that has since changed.

I had that question on my RPAL exam this spring. The correct answer was illegal to import, but I believe that applied to an individual. Not sure about a dealer situation.

had the same question on my RPAL test. Instructor told me ahead of time the question didn't count because it was an obsolete unenforceable law. didn't matter what I answered the question would not be counted in my score.

My guy was not so helpful. It's nice to see it has been pulled from enforcement. Just one tiny particle of stupidity removed from our gun laws.

Incendiary, explosive and flechette rounds are the only ones that is prohibited, armour piercing is fine for rifle but not in pistols.

Your instructor is an idiot. Obviously he doesn't remain current in the legal sides of the shooting community. Aside from that, the fact that the tests have not been corrected clearly illustrates that the CFSC/CRFSC courses are a complete waste of time.

On a side note, all rifle ammo is "armor piercing" when discussing soft armor.

I never took the course, just challenged both exams, so that may be why nothing was said. I got the question wrong, which is why I remember it. The course book said nothing about hollowpoints, so I think it has been updated and my examiner was simply behind the times. He was decent on everything else, though. Wasn't worried about tiny details on the practical, just that I could safely handle firearms and knew what I was doing with the various actions. No bad attitude like others I have read about on CGN.

At one time, HP handgun ammo was considered explosive by NRCAN. Had nothing to do with the gun laws. Some idiot civil servant just added them to the Explosives Act on his/her own volition. They have long since been shown the error of their ways.

There are quite a few examiners who are less than informed or reasonable when it comes to testing. Most the of the real horror stories I've read/heard about come from the east.

I just had a guy who teaches claim that the Outlaw should be restricted. I advised him to contact Canam directly for clairfication of the law.

We have, and always will be, our own worst enemies... That's why I spend more and more time on my other rec sports like competitive ping-pong and nude water polo, I find the crowd much more reasonable and much less insidiously petty.
