Whats the hardest kicking gun you ever fired?

One of my school buddies who had a bit of a mean streak in him had one of these.

His favourite joke was to go shooting with newbies. He'd shoot that cutdown 12 ga loaded with 7 1/2's one handed. Then he'd ask the newb if he wanted to try it. Of course, being guys they'd say yes. Then he'd load it with a 3" slug.

One guy had to get stitches in the forehead. But since there was never any concussions or permanent injuries I have to admit I used to laugh along with the others.

A pal of mine had an old wore out H&R Topper 12 gauge. With a 3" load of 17/8 oz. BB's the forearm would come off in your left hand and the barrel would smack ya in the forehead. I wonder if that's why I still can't shoot a shotgun?

A fellow wanted to take a shot with my .416 Rigby. I had her stoked up pretty good, 350 gr X's clocked over 2800. Anyhow, when he touched it off I could see daylight between the butt and his shoulder....I bet that was the hardest kicking gun he's ever shot. I started to yell whoa - but it was too late, now he thinks a .223 is a nice rifle.

This guys got to be the winner

The worst I have fired was a double barreled 4 bore rifle, 1850 grain bullet and 400 grains of black powder

Thats damn impressive. There must only be a handfull of 4 bores that people actually shoot these days. Heres a comparison pic:

My cousins were back in newfoundland for a holiday a couple weeks ago, me and a couple of my buddies took them in to try a few clays. After we fired away about a 1000 rounds of shot, I passed the two of them a 3" mag slug to try in my Maverick. That was pretty fun to watch, but the funniest was when one of my buddies let a 3" mag slug go out of an old Cooey single shot with no recoil pad. He was left clutching his shoulder saying "Ouch! Owww! Owww! He didn't ask to try another slug after that.:D

Worst from the bench was a Ruger #3 in 45/70. Another nasty one was my T/C Contender...a friend let me try out his non-ported 45/70 barrel. Never seen a barrel lift so much in recoil :)

.375 H&H out of a Brno bolt gun, wasn't that bad, actually dissapointing.

3" slugs out a 870, after 15 rounds trying to sight it in at the bench I decided it wasn't worth the pain and let my brother finish off the last few rounds. I remember reaching for the volume dial being painful after that.

5 rounds from a .445 SuperMag out of a Contender, .44 mags are like .22lr after that.

Would love to try a 4 bore! Just once though :)

3" slugs in my stoeger m2000 of a rest. I was sighting in a slug barrel. I'm glad that job is done! Man did that kick.

Dave.

A J. Tolley hammer double chambered for the .500/.450x3-1/2" Magnum Nitro Express Number 2. We had homemade casings and hard-cast bullets and were loading the thing with 95 grains of old surplus 4831...... got a 2-foot fireball at the muzzle and the rifle elevated to 85 degrees every time you pulled the trigger. That was in 1965 and my shoulder is STILL sore!

Oh, I suppose I could have mentioned the 76.2mm HV piece we played with, but it was nicely bolted down to the Firefly at the time. Still, it drove the whole tank backward a couple inches every time you mashed the magic button.

John Suket mentiones the Snider Cavalry Carbine, and I commiserate. They are just SO much fun but, if you're honest with yourself, they ARE a nasty little brute. They actually twist to the RIGHT in your hands as they are fired, reaction to all that lead moving slowly down the bore, turning to the left. If you are standing behind the guy with the Snider, you can actually WATCH the bullets go with good binos. A world-shaking WHUMPP! and there is half an acre of smoke...... just about the best pure fun there is. Funny thing, though , but Snider long rifles and Sergeant's Rifles just don't have that nasty kick; they are very polite and the most fun I have ever had with a gun, dollar for dollar.

The hardest I've been kicked was with a friends Custom Sako. It was chambered to some wildcat .375. Though I can't remember the design specs, we did light up my chrony to the tune of 2950 fsp with 300 bullets. Solidly in the .378 Weatherby category. Put it this way, you didn't have to ask anyone if it went off!:D The third shot with the too short stock earned me a scope cut, and ended that little exercise.
By comparison my own CZ .375 H&H with a Pachmarr pad is an absolute piece of cake. 50-60 shots through that are no big deal at all. Speed of recoil, and its jarring effect seems to be the biggest factor to me.
