I asked something similar for black rifles...but thought I'd put it here too. most red rifles I've handled are heavy as hell and I'd love to use one for hunting that starts at around 5.5lbs before you add optics and ammo. is this possible?

Nope lol unlike NATO, the USSR mostly stuck with Ferrous materials for their guns. Ur best bet is still in black rifles.

Sbr ar15 7.62x39
The fellow wants this for hunting, so no restricted.

Not a red rifle, and a little heavy at over 7 lbs, but the 7.62x39 mm variant of the WS-MCR is expected to arrive at Wolverine shortly from Spectre, for sale by them and for distribution to other firearms retailers. And you can use 10 round XCR pistol magazines in it, for those times in the bush where you're worried you might the lunch of another predator or group of predators.

Edit: bush, not bus, my bad

I haven’t been in a bus like that since I left Vancouver.

Cz858 is lighter than a vz58 so I would say cz858 with a folder and a red dot. My youngest daughter hunted with that setup for years and it worked great.

I thought the original version was ok?

CZ858 with folding stock and iron sights and a 5 rounds short magazine.

That being said, the SKS isn't too bad to lug around all day. Remove the cleaning rod and bayonet for the noise. You can replace the rear sight with a rail and mount a small red dot sight.

As the Gentleman above said a Ruger mini 30 . or if you want Uber reliability start lifting weights and carry a sks with a hardwood stock in the bush .
