What's the minimum barrel length you can have for a NON-RESTRICTED PG 870?

It's about 1/4" too short with a 14" barrel and a witness protection grip on the 870....this one makes it though,

If you have a Norinco receiver you could get a 15" barrel for it then you'd be good with the speedfeed...

As Justin1628 says, an 870 with the 18.5" barrel and pistol grip is a very short gun already and I doubt you would notice the extra 4.5" over the 14". Plus, the longer barrel lets you get an extra round in the mag.:D

The balance is way nicer with a shorter barrel.

I'm not adverse to 18.5", I've had a couple (500 & Win 1300). I'm just going for shortest possible. 4.5" is substantial when trying to put in a pack. I have a line on a 14" threaded for internal chokes. If the 14" doesn't pan out, I know 18.5 will definitely work. And I have a +1 extension on it already, so if I can't deter a bear with 5 shells, I don't think one more will matter. Thanks for the input all the same.

I think with the sling plate you could get by, but you do present a good angle, Norinco factory 15" barrel/ reciever combo. Any options on where to get said Norinco components?

Those short barrels get pretty loud in a hurry. I understand the want of something lightweight though.

I wonder if the SPL goes up exponentially with every inch one takes off. It sure sounds like it.

I agree. But if I'm packing it for hiking in bear country, the loudness might help scare unwanted Yogi's off if I have to use it.

I think I read a study where they took a shotgun and checked the recoil and report and then chopped an inch and repeated. I'll try to dig it up.

What if you've had a lic. gunsmith add an adjustable choke system to a factory barrel? why wouldn't that be legal?

Canam is supposed to be bringing in barrels but I don't think he's bringing in 15" ers
There was one in the EE for sale yesterday...

is that with, or without measuring the sling stud at the back of the grip? :D

one thing that always worries me about the Knoxx stocks is the fact that they telescope an inch or so under recoil: i would not be surprised if there are cops out there that would compress the stock an inch just to get a measurement thats under OAL....then youd be #%@$ed, to put it mildly.

Good question you made me go and check again :p yep it's 26 1/4" without the stud, 26.5" with it.

The compression question is interesting. I suspect the right measurement is the "at rest " measurement, not compressed - since the argument for a length limit is that a short firearm is easier to conceal , and nobody will carry one of these compressed. I'm also puzzled as to how much arm and wrist strength is needed to have it compress the full inch when fired.

mine has a Surefire forend which adds another 3/4" to the OAL, so its a moot point, I guess...
