My first foray into reloading. I was 16, just bought an old .303. Sported real nice. Lyman peep sights and front ramp, someone did a good job. Only had factory winchester 180's available at CTC. Shot well enough to get a deer at 100yds. Anyway, I was at a flea market the next summer and a guy sold me a Lee Loader ($8) for .303 telling me that it would be cheaper than dirt to shoot if I reloaded them. So, being gullible, I bought it. Then went to the local gun shop and bought .303 bullets (hornady 150gr), and some powder IMR something or other can't rememeber now, primers. Proceeded to make bullets. Man was I some proud. Made my first 20 in an hour!! Look out. Took them to the range to shoot. :-(( Was I disappointed!! I had a 2' group at 50yds. Anybody want to beat that??? I went home and got my commercial rounds (180's) and went back. At 50 yds it was easy to hit a small paper plate each and every time. Had about a 3 inch group. I could still hit a large (10") plate at 100 yds 9/10 times. Good enough for me. I took the reloading stuff home, threw it in a box and cursed it for what it was, useless. And I got ROOKED!! A year later, I met the guy again and he asked me how my reloads were shooting. So I TOLD HIM. They sucked azz. He was puzzled and asked me to come over to his house one night later in the week and bring the reloading stuff with me. So I did. I had all my stuff, the rifle, my commercial rounds. He sat down and cleaned the rifle. Looked at my reloads (they were fine). Then he fired some of them. Now, Chris was a SHOOTER and he had a 16" group at 50yds. So he loaded some himself, no better. Then he fired some 174's he had made, 6" @100yds. Then he fired some of my 180's, same result. Then he fired some 215's he had loaded. 1.5" @ 100yds!!! He then explained what happened to me. The rifle was an 1898 Lee Enfield Carbine. built for a 215gr BP round. The rifling was slower and worn enough to where it would not stabilize a light bullet. Dang hard to find 215's but it'll still shoot my 180 gr handloads to 4" @ 100yds (I am a better shot now than I was 30 years ago. Not better than I was 15 years ago though). I love reloading and wouldn't shoot factories now unless that was the only way to get brass.
