What's with the ammo shortage?

Just about all the 7.62x51 NATO surlpus has been shot, sold or destroyed by now. That said, there seems to be quite a bit of cheap Norinco 7.62x51 on the market at the moment. Haven't seen prices this low in at least 5 years. That said, why not reload? There's still plenty of brass around.

once they get done with the 2 wars in the middle east you boys might see a good influx of surplus 7.62x51 in a couple years time

Budget Shooter Supply (board sponsor, find their link at the top) has Czech surplus .308. No idea if it's corrosive like the 7.62 x39

I was pretty surprised to see it. I didn't think the Czechs produced enough .308 ammo/had it in their system long enough to have surplus to sell

Wait that stuff is linked? Does it come with the links? Paul did say it was difficult to pack. I just ordered 900 rounds and I'm waiting for it to arrive.

Yeah, it says so right on the page: "5 rounds linked".

I would surmise that it was all full belts, but to be able to sell it it had to be reduced to the "5 round magazine limit"

It is according to the item info on thier site: "This ammunition is corrosive. Clean your rifle accordingly."

Wow I totally missed that on the site.

Our gun laws make no sense. As if a criminal won't just relink everything if they get their hands on a case.

Well...assuming said criminal has a belt fed gun, sure.

Definitely less of a deterrent than the indestructible aluminum rivet in the box mags...thank god they can't drill those out in a matter of seconds.

"All hail the rivet! Saver of babies, keeper of the peace, and guardian of law and order."

Got some

There's no shortage of 308 win hunting ammo in canada. Kick your favorite ammo store's manager in the ass and get the shelves restocked. LOTS of inventory at the large canadian sporting goods wholesalers.
Well not sure if this the right thing but here goes;
Finally found Some 168grs. 308W. It's in Hornady A-MAX not cheap but I still have some reservations to use it as the following text will explain.

"A-MAX bullets are usually longer and more tapered than their Match weight equivalents. This increases the BC and makes them more suited for long range shooting. Because they produce a longer OAL cartridge, A-MAX bullets are not usually suitable for magazine fed operation. Some people don't like the plastic tip and believe it may cause erratic shots if deformed. My experience does not support this. Overall, shoot the A-MAX if you're single loading and shoot the Match if you need to shoot and reload quickly from a magazine."

Well, at least I can shoot something out of it, not sure how it will cycle in the Mag. Let you know later i.e. if I survive:D

Forgot some things.

Ya, allot of ammo in the major Canadian suppliers mostly in 180gr. or 150gr. but the 168gr is somewhat rare? Lots of cheap SP rounds all over in 150gr. not my first choice for an M14, the soft tips are screwy for this gun. Need 168gr. HP or BT. I guess WE NEED to kick some A..S with those suppliers:dancingbanana:
Anyway, this thread seems to have allot of belt and stripper clip guys, who want to get some cheap Milspec ammo from??. So be it, I have nothing against that, just want to bring it up a notch.
:p

You Nailed it!

Well for hunting, their are a lot of option for .308 hunting rounds out their. Walmart, Canadian Tire, all have a somewhat decent selection where Im from. Federal, Winchester and Remington are common brands.

As for precision, Wolverine has Federal Match ammo, $40 for 20 or $330 for 200.

Or if your really pickey, start reloading. Choose your bullet, brass, primer, powder and tailor each load to you specific rifle. Best results you can get. It just takes a initial investment for the equipment and of course the time to build a load.

If your looking for cheap ammo, all your gonna find in Military ball or FMJ target ammo. And even then its not really "cheap" and not all that common. You can't hunt with it and accuracy is not what most would call precision grade.

There is no such thing as cheap Ammo. Most are looking for NATO target rounds for fun and whatever. They come in belts and stripper clips out of wherever. Most have corrosive powders and good luck to you if you buy that stuff. After many rounds, you might want to look at your Barrel and figure out what you are shooting. Get the Milspec USA rounds if you can find them, if not, the 308W commercial rounds work good if you can find them. GOOD LuckH:S:

Good stuff SIR

Ron Paul 2012 lol, just kidding

I haven't played with good bullets in my M14 yet, I plan on investigating that claim that soft points act weird... thanks!

Use them i.e. the SP and then the Good stuff. The Sp will give you a pain in the you know what. Look for allot of lead in the Chamber and other parts:mad:
After 100+ rounds with SP you should be convinced.
BTY this is not a Political thread for US politics. Ron who? Jeez, can we move on? Dont want to know!

What the F..k

Now we have some BOZO that wants to make a rain jacket out of his girl friend unless he cant find love between his legs or many rounds of ammo ??? Hello, some other guy that wants to speak about US Politics. Where is this going? Sorry I even started this thread. Please delete:mad:
If you dont have anything intellegent to say, load your gun, look up the barrel, and pull the trigger. It will do us all a favour

I Think You Should Take Your Own Advice.

Read the posts and figure it out. I know you can. Not going to follow my own advice, but certain people should. Let's just get back to the subject that was intented. NOT all the CRAPP that followed.
