What's with the Current Trend of Large-Capacity Magazines in Hunting Rifles

I disagree with the large capacity statement. You have been listening to the govt. propaganda to long and now believe it. Standard capacity magazine as manufactured , you have the option of not loading the mag to full capacity if you so choose. Also lots of rifles available with blind mags that should allow you to select what you need/want. JMO

I'm thinking of the newer-manufacture big-game hunting rifles. Some of them now come with large-capacity detachable magazines capable of holding 10 rounds. Who needs 10 rounds in the magazine when hunting? I can't think of a single time when I've been hunting over the past 50+ years that I've ever felt the need for more than the 3 or 4 rounds in my magazines. I greatly prefer fixed magazines with hinged floorplates over detachable magazines (both aesthetically and for security), but I can live with a 3-5 round detachable mag if it sits flush with the bottom of the stock. The larger magazines that drop way down below the stock line look terrible, in my opinion, but more importantly add unnecessary weight (close to 4-5 oz.or more when fully loaded) as well as making the rifle more difficult to carry in the field. When I'm carrying a rifle in the field (not slung) I usually carry it with my hand under about the location of the magazine. That seems to be about the best point for balance. A magazine hanging down in that location gets in the way. Is this trend just a nod to tacticool?

Settle down boomer.

FUDD remarks like the thread author gave us C-21, then C-68 and so on…..thanks so much. I’m going to start using a drum mag hunting now…..

Actually lieberals hate all guns, all gun owners, want you in the woodchipper. The op did nothing to you Jethro. Just expressing an opinion on preference. Preference and choice are great, the op was expressing his, and remarking that there are no choices but tacticool anymore.

What are all you large extended hunting rifle mag tacticool fans compensating for .........:confused::confused:

:nest:................:stirthepot2:.......................

I’m surprised that no one yet as accused the OP of being a ####ing liberal ####### hypocrite lol
You ask a question and then people assume you’re against them or there rights CGN at its best!

Nothing wrong with a ten round mag on a hunting rifle…

How much does that weigh fully loaded?

Large capacity mags are great at the range. The only "hunting" situations where I ever felt a large capacity mag was a benefit was hunting coyotes with hounds using a Mini 14: Rifle was so inaccurate you needed to spray and pray to hit one. The other would be gophers. Certainly an advantage for shooting wild pigs/boar like in the videos.

We can make jokes about "over compensation", but I believe that the truth is; people have not grown up shooting like many of us older guys have. Having shot starting with my Dad at about 6 years old, we got good. We used the same guns for much of our formative years and into our youth. We got to the point where when we pulled the trigger we fore-knew that what we aimed at was going to be hit. Most shooters today have not had that experience and I am pretty sure that as a result there is a lack of faith in their rifle or their personal ability.

I have taught a lot of new shooters and while I take for granted that when I aim and fire my shot is on point at 100 yards; I cant help but enjoy the look of amazement when a new shooter hits the target where they aim, and then do it over and over again. I will never tire of helping new people in our sport.

I know this will anger some, but for some they are just "cool" for others maybe a symptom of a lack of confidence.in either the rifle or one's own ability. Certainly merchandising, marketing and zombie movies in a consumer society plays a roll in generating a perceived need as well.

In most hunting situations a protruding mag can snag on stuff, accidently release and fall out of your gun, if not charged properly, be prone to misfeeds, and be an obstruction to carrying and handling, not to mention the extra weight added to the rifle. With my CZ .22s 5 shot in the field, 10 at the range; my other two hunting rifles are mausers with floor plates. My other range guns are military or single shots.

Now, I admit I would like to be able to use full capacity CZ mags in my 9mm.

Anyway, buy and use what you want, and what makes you happy and comfortable; and have fun.

This. How many 30-30 carbines were happily stuffed to the gills so deep woods wanderers could feel safe when alone?

Oh yeah. C-21 didn't like its capacity of six in your handy carbine that served your family at least two generations.
Yet never once, on purpose, ever pointed at another human being.

Keep in mind, it is a variant of a military design; an "assault rifle". LOL

Agreed. I hunted for many years with guns that had a 5 shot max capacity (303 lee enfield and then Remington 7600 30.06) and have never needed anything larger. I think the fact that most guns are now used for range shooting and rarely (if ever) used for hunting is where you see the need for larger capacity. The only time I would felt the need for more shells is the time I dropped the gun and had to later go to a gravel pit to re sight it back in.

Some people like the tactical look, even if it has no practical value on a big game rifle. Personally, I like a flush magazine, that makes it handier to carry a rifle with one hand.

My biggest problem with my “tactical” rifles is that they are too heavy for comfortable hunting unless I spend big $$$ cutting weight.
