It's for clearing corners. I have one that attaches to a baton. I like the baton one a lot better than on the firearm. On the firearm is just lame. Yes pretty much the Saving private Ryan thing. Works well on stairs too.

I believe you're right. I can see it being useful for corners and "T" corridors/intersections, where the muzzle covers one end while the operator can keep a visual on the opposite corridor while still under cover.

There are mirror "kits" around (with picitanny mounts) that allow you to use AR mounted Aimpoints, EO techs, etc, to shoot around corners while only exposing the rifle. But this doesn't look like one of them--especially in the absence of a dot sight in the photo.

I agree with the trigger discipline comments, however, I'm pretty sure she's armed with a lethal airsoft rifle.
Look closely at the flash hider and you'll see the inner barrel. Also, the bolt release is canted at a very odd angle. Not to mention the rounded Allen screws instead of takedown pins.
