Just when i though the SKS's being brought in couldn't get any ####tyer i see spot welded SKS's now being bough in by higher end dealers. What ugly POS, i seen one of these POS at wholesale sports in person and its visible all the way from the other side of the counter.

Thought the BBQ black was bad, this is getting ridiculous now. Who ever decided these mags look good must have been kicked in the head by a moose before making that decision.

They may as well sell without the mag because its only fit for trash.

This is how the magazines were pinned in the latest shipment. It's unfortunate, as a few nice rifles came through.

Well, the market craves shooters and sporter candidates, so, there's that.

There is a lug under the mag follower, and its welded from the bottom of the mag through a hole, hence the weld spot.

Who cares? It's a spot weld on an SKS! I get a kick out of you purists and your matching numbers. For god sakes it's a $200 sixty five year old rifle of which there are literally MILLIONS.

Put a tapco stock on it. Ditch the box mag and get on with your day.

Or get a nice non-refurbished example with the better pining method and keep the original stock and you'll have a much nicer looking and functioning firearm and therefore a much better day ;)

If i'm paying for an sks that's ####ed compared to another one that's not there better be like 50% off.

If it were to cost more than a few bottles of quality scotch I might #####. As it is, it's a old surplus rifle and would probably cost the exporter more to do a quality modification than what the rifle is worth at their end.

Those tapco stocks and other accessories for these rifles is the only thing gun stores actually make money off of selling these things. Sell an SKS for $200 and the store probably makes $10. Once you add on the tapco mag, stock, a sling for the new stock, a gun case, trigger lock, ammunition, scope mount, scope, now the store is actually making some $$$.

I liked it better when they welded the rod to the follower. Invisible from the outside.

Many of them have failures to feed because of the inconsistency of the rod size versus different tolerances.

As far as pricing goes, at $200 there definitely isn't much room for profit margins -- these do have to ship from overseas. Nothing wrong with a $200 hunting rifle or project base for the mall cop guys. They won't really ever be collectible. Even the 1949s with the franken-mags don't sell for much used.

The neatest modification that I have seen involves replacing the riveted stud at the follower spring.
Welding a peg on the follower is unobtrusive and fast and easy to do.
The large welded external stud through the magazine cover is sloppy, lazy and ugly work. The peg on the follower would cost no more, and take no more time.
The importer needs to specify what is acceptable.

Exactly, sloppy, lazy and ugly. Not to mention most times the mags are painted black. All mine are peg on follower to and its much better.

We all talk about buhbad sks's well these have been destroyed from the start now.

So you want gun stores to loose $90 off of every sale of these rifles.

That not my problem if they make accepting these ok, Customers shouldn't pay for mistakes of others.

As to the weld on the mag, there basically just shooters at that point. Its a permanent modifications that damaged the rifle and will never be able to be restored to original matching. You have no chance of even selling for parts to the US if there is a ban here in Canada because they are ####ed.

Just because you may only now have started seeing these ugly pinned mags, that doesn't mean they're new.
They've been around for years...

I care. I like my milsurp guns to have my matching numbers and respect paid to them. By respect, I mean if you are going to work on them, do it in craftsman fashion that you would be proud of.
