I've owned a lot of really cool guns over the years, but of all of the "black rifles" I've had, the one I loved from the moment I saw it, and still do, is my XCR-M Micro. Not because it's the best in any particular way, but just "because". Every time I take it out of the safe I just think "wow, THAT is cool!!"

So, what's your all-time favorite black rifle? Not because it's the "best".... but just because it's cool to you. Could be a prohib, or a gun you no longer own.

Let's see them!

Hmmm..... tough question! If I were to base my response on the particular firearm's era, historical confict involvement, and overall "black guns" impact, then I would have to give the nod to the original, 1960 Artillerie Inrichtingen-manufactured Armalite AR10 rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. The follow-on historical impact is obvious based on the firearm's close resemblence to its progeny, the venerable M16 Rifle:

Were I to choose the AR15/C7/C8/M16 rifle/carbine, then my choice would be either the HK 416 or the Colt Canada C8 Flat-Top Heavy-Barrel. I am fortunate to own both along with other examples of the genre, however if it were down to just one I would have to go with the home team's C8 FTHB Carbine. I carried it in war and staked my life on its reliability and accuracy. It never let me down:

At the end of the day I choose a variant of the AR15, specifically the first and only successful belt-feed conversion kit based on the Fightlite Mission-Configurable Rifle (MCR). It took Jeffrey Herring (Chief Engineer) 15 years to get it just right, but boy howdy did he ever hit the sweet spot with this belt-feed (or magazine feed) conversion. Reliability is flawless on the low gas setting, leaving the adverse setting for when fouling is present or a higher rate of fire is required at the expense of the firearm's longevity. It is simply an excellent adaptation of the base AR15/M16 which significantly enhances the firearm's overall capabilities with an emphasis on reliable sustained fire:

Colt Canada C8 configured with the same furniture and extensive rail system used by the SAS, Elcan sight on which was mounted a tiny red dot unit for close range, Surefire weapon light, Vector Optics sighting laser, and ideally a 24 year body with which to hump it around the countryside.
