truck/tractor gun sks in 7.62x39 you drop it /run over it with tractor -oh well.can be used on gophers ,coyotes,and deer at resonable ranges .my sks has taken all.and shot more than 3000rds. cheap to shoot/buy.
25-06 works good for coyotes,deer,and elk. my dad uses his 250-3000 savage for everything .
22lr for plinking gopher hunting
a magnum is not required for hunting in north america ............but its fun to hear the BANG!lol!

There are so many great choices for you to start with,however we all have to start somewhere so I'll suggest a short, light bolt-action carbine or up to 22" bbl, in a round that can be used as a good bench mark against all others.
The .308Winchester.
Everyone who has worked with this cartridge and compared it's potential as a game getter knows it performs well beyond it's rather pleasant recoil.
There are lots of .308Win based case fans here, from 243,260,7mm/08/338/358 etc, that have their own unique abilities from their parent .308Winchester.
I pick the .308 for you to start based on Rifle's chambered for it, and availability of both economy and premium based factory ammo loaded for it.

My personal fave is the 6.5mm. I like it loaded in a 55mm case. The 6.5 has an amazingly flat trajectory and the bullets great SD and BC.
With a 95gr VMax it'll blow gophers and with a 130gr TSX anything else.
Oh and I like .22 packaged in LR brass. Preferably CCI SubSonics.

When I am in this situation i take my Combo 22mag/20ga
A combo can be a good choice. I take mine for the odd walk on windy rainy days on old skid roads along a local river.Handy when you could end up jump shooting a Deer or Ruff Grouse. It's a Brno ZH 304, 7x57R/12ga.

It's your lucky day guy. I just picked up a small scale at a local antique store. With the OU set of 7x57R/12ga. barrels, it weighs 7 3/4lbs.

Life's short so you may as well enjoy the ride while you can. I hope 'the day' is a long way off but the time will come to start thinning 'them' out. So, in the meantime I'll shoot, hunt and enjoy them while I have them.
