I have a 5.56 chamber AR with a 1 in 7 twist. going to be shooting 55 grain fmj using federal .223 cases (I got a bucket full from the indoor range) wondering what everyone powder of choice is...

Im thinking Winchester 748...

dunno where i would find any WC735 now a days but the H335 sounds good. I just read the details on it and it was actually the military choice for 5.56 NATO THANKS!

Winchester 748 is good. Almost all medium fast powders work well in the .223/5.56. My favourites are WC735 (no longer available), H335, H4895, Varget, H4064.

I use BLC(2) for my plinking loads, it meters well and performance is quite good (velocity and precision). Being a double base ball powder, it is temperature sensitive, so if it's really warm or really cold you will notice a significant velocity change, and this might be enough to seriously impact how well your rifle shoots the load you developed. For 55gr FMJ bulk bullets, I wouldn't be concerned about this. For precision loads, I prefer Varget. I have also had very good results with H4895. These are both single base stick powders (if memory serves me correctly), are much more temperature stable and are part of the Hodgdon Extreme powder series.

For AR shooting I mostly use powders that are easy to meter. H335, W748. For varminting in a bolt gun I used IMR4064 and 55gr anything and couldn't beat it in the accuracy dept., but it doesn't meter great.

I prefer H335 or cfe 223. The H335 meters consistently every time, so no weighing involved once you have your powder thrower set

Have loaded thousands with H335 (.16c/rd.) and have seen excellent results.
For cheap general range fodder or impromptu plinking sessions D4198 (.08c/rd.) has been working great for me. Rifle and carbine length gas systems (I've tested thus far).
