What's your go-to grouse hunting setup?

He is a beauty!

I use my deadly accurate Marlin 782 in 22 mag from the early 1980's, set up with a period correct scope chief in 4X.

The grouse around here rarely take to wing so a shotgun is kind of unnecessary, and I don't like eating feathers.

I had a rifle exactly like that. I shot a few birds with it, but I found it wasn't doing anything better than a .22 LR, except be a bit messier, so I sold it. Wish I'd kept it some days.

I have not gone for a single hunt yet, but I think a 20gauge is good but I’m torn between getting a few cheaper guns or getting a nice expensive gun. I definitely want to do some small game hunting like rabbit, grouse, and other upland birds. Any insight for a nee hunter?

Is that a GSP? I’m looking at getting one in the next year or 2 that’s a nice gundog you got there! What’s your approach for training for hunting? Assuming you hunt with it.

Personally, I'm in the fewer-but-nicer camp...

I agree with Sillymike. A gun can be a life-long companion, and a source of many memories of wonderful days out. A quality gun gives pride-of-ownership and is more than just a tool. Take the same care in choosing as you would a best friend. You won’t regret it.

That's a GSP ,

Those are setters in the picture you quoted. If considering a dog for hunting, join a dog training organization before hand. You'll get alot of gold exposure to different breeders and breeds. There are a few NAVHDA chapters close to you. I'd start there, whether you stay with it, up to you !

Are those banded pheasants? Released birds then? 100 pheasants is a good number of reps for a dog!

Both, release birds are put out 24 hours before you can hunt on our 12,000 acres not the put and shoot ones like so many others .The wild birds are from the upper okanagan, but she works both and holds point very well ,sometimes feels like cheating after using flushers for so many years ,have a flusher in a 80lb. field trials Lab but his nose is nothing like hers.

I hunted for several years with a 28 gauge. Used the old Winchester 28 gauge 1 oz. loads. Maybe hard to find now but killed birds well. No difference to a 20 gauge. Killed birds at 50 yards albeit sitting. Sue me , I'm a meat hunter.

About the only way my 28 gauge would have any hope of killing birds at 50 yards would be if could hit one with a rifled slug.
