What's your hand gun of choice?

Second that
S&W revolver. 357/38, or 22 lr. If you master double action trigger pull, you'll be able to shoot any handgun. I didn't buy a semi-auto until I'd been shooting revolvers for about 5 years. I've owned most of the different actions. My least favourite is the DA/SA auto, no matter the brandname. Took many years, but Glock is now my favourite system.
SIG 1911 POW-MIA
I had that gun, around 400 rounds or so when it got dirty, it would get the odd FTE. I sold it.
Id go with a G17 RTF2 myself. Should have kept the last one I had. DOH!
I like 9 and 10mm glocks, and quality 1911s in .45acp.
There are other good pistols, of course, but those are the ones I gravitate towards.

Single action 1911 is a good start point.
SA/DA 9mm - ex. 92fs is great as well
If u like the challenge, then take on the DA pistols - sig 226/m&p9/Glock17....
I have seen new shooters having issues with DA triggers. It takes awhile to get use to the DA triggers.
