What's your home defence handgun?

Have any of the proponents of birdshot actually shot anything other than birds with it? I have a few times including porcupines, raccoons and similar animals. I used birdshot only because I was hunting and it was all that I had with me at the time. From 3 to 5 feet it works fine but then just about anything would. Increase the distance and it becomes very doubtful.

Birdshot would never be a deliberate choice unless I was hunting birds. Having to let a threat get closer because I don't have proper ammo isn't part of the equation.

where are people getting these mini digital safes that go into side tables or night stands. My night stand drawer height is at most 6-8 inches if that...

Birdshot at close range performs similarly to slugs and/or buckshot. When traveling as a single unit it acts like a single unit. That being said, I wouldn't choose birdshot as my load for several reasons. Birdshot by its very definition is designed for birds and thus consists of many pellets(hundreds). For those concerned about the legal side you are responsible for all pellets. At any significant distance (10 yards or further) birdshot becomes very ineffective in terminating life. It can be very effective in terminating a threat.

A home invasion is usually supported by the scumbags desire to rob you of your possessions. Even the dumbest criminal understands that getting shot over a T.V. is a poor exchange of risk VS. reward. If the scumbag in question is intent on killing you it is for one of two reasons. They're either a sociopathic killer or you're involved with some bad sh*t and have been targeted. Either way, shooting someone with birdshot will probably remove their desire to press the attack. In the case of the common thief, getting shot is not their idea of a good nights work.

Birdshot is better than nothing but it is far less effective than a more serious load. Couple that with the drama that will ensue if the scumbag survives and you'll be the sole contributor to your own legal demise. Dead men tell no tales. Striving to netrualize the threat in the most effective means possible pays dividends both during and after the events.

Birdshot is a very bad idea. A better idea is 0 Buck or #1 Buck which offers a good compromise in pellet size and pellet number. If you shoot an attacker who is wearing heavy garments (winter coats) and or is also very fat, the likehood of birdshot to the chest area producing the results you want are minimized. If deadly force is legally warranted why would you handicap yourself with something meant for tiny birds?

Agreed. I'd take bird if I had nothing else..

First of all, the clowns that say knives... wow... Bringing a knife to a potential gun fight are ya? Good luck with that... Secondly the guys that say "nothing" because they don't want to break the law or "deal" with the consequences, Cowards! :p I'd rather be getting visits from my family in jail, then visiting their graves... In all seriousness, the likely hood of doing jail time for a self defense situation resulting in the death of a dirt bag is slim to say the least...
In the off chance of a break-in, I will go for my G17. 9 times out of 10 he'll see the gun and book it... the 1 time the invader acts aggressively, he gets a whole lot of dead... If I go to jail, so be it.... At least me and my family are still alive to tell the story....

I specifically remember watching a crime TV show where a pizza dude was robbed at a false delivery. Pizza dude ran and was shot in the back. Luckily he was smart enough to cover hiz back with a pizza box. The birdshot did nothing to him and he got away safely. How effective do you think your birdshot will be assuming the guy is wearing a heavy shirt or two and a jacket?

Sorry, I thought long and hard on letting this one slide, but I can't....

Do you believe everything you see on the television. Because even CSI gets it wrong some of the time. By that I mean all of the time. I'd have to do some tests at varying distances, and I have a quantity of pizza boxes, and some birdshot. I'm not doubting at some point, they will lose the energy to penetrate 2 layers cardboard, and a Meatlovers, but I'm guessing it's farther than the pizza guy can waddle away by the time the weapon is brought to bear. :shotgun: Even is he is running with his hands behind his back.

I'm going to put this on the to-do list, and try to get back to you.

My first round is bird, each follow up is oh oh.

I wish I remember the crime show but it was one of those real crime series liek America's most wanted.

DA revolver with speedloader next to it in night table drawer....doesn't need to be locked up because it's an antique.

So what you're saying is that you'd rather rely on the 'nanny state' rather than take responsibility for the protection of yourself and family.....pathetic.

I think he was being sarcastic. It never ceases to amaze me how some people on this message board do not understand this concept.
