smart man... once thought of getting an antique myself so I could bring it to the pit shooting with buddies... oh the freedom!!!:D

Excellent idea if you don't have kids and their friends running around the house.

Count me as one CGN member that had one "killed on his street."

It occurred 300m from my house. A guy pulled up to the patio of a restaurant 15 houses from mine adjacent to the street, opened up the window of his car and emptied a magazine from a pistol into a guy. An innocent bystander, dead. He left behind a wife and child. Later the guy admitted he had gotten into a fight with "another guy" the day before and mistakenly thought this guy was the guy he got into a fight with. Killed an innocent man having a beer. A one in forty year fluke I know! But you asked, so count me as "one of those CGN members"

I own one crappy Chinese 9mm Torkarev clone pistols which sits in the basement in a safe. My 870 Tactical sits in the bedroom because it can. I have no problem going to jail or serving time knowing I prevented my wife and daughter from being injured or killed from an intruder. I love people and life, especially mine and my family's foremost. If an intruder enters my house intent on causing harm, they have freely chosen to waive their right to live. I will definitely respect their choice.

I live in an area where I do not even consider the possibility of a break in. I don't know where all you people live. But honestly when was the last family murdered in your neighborhood? With 50,000+ members on this site I would guess less than ten have had someone killed on their street. Unless it is one of the few hotspots that do exist in a small handfull of cities.

That said if someone came into my house and started to threaten or actually injure or kill my family members I wouldn't hesitate a moment to dispatch the assaliant with the most appropriate tool available. I would probably either take my old side by side with some buck. Or my cz 9mm or whatever was handy.

The thing to remember if you shoot an invader is to state and continue to state. "I feared for my life.". Because the charter allows you to use appropriate force. Yes the intial hassle after the shooting will suck big time and your guns will probably be seized and you may spend some time in jail until it gets to court but once you are there and you get your chance to say I feared for my life and the lives of my family and I shot the intruder because she was trying to kill my wife/daughter/son and me. I don't think you will be convicted by your peers. Though you will still probably get screwed because this is

Canada. You might lose your guns perhaps even permently but at least you and your family are still alive and perhaps your case will set a precedent so the rest of us aren't so f'ed over.

But your use of logic, experience and reason against bird shot as a defensive round make you close minded.

Precisely...:D

I've shot some pretty big black bears with 00Buck and slugs both and a couple of them managed to run a fair distance (thankfully enough in the other direction) after taking multiple hits. I've even had a 140 pound whitetail doe run 300 meters after taking a 12 ga slug through the boiler room at 40 feet. I'd not want to trust lesser performance on an angry, agitated and possibly medicated assailant.

Folks are free to chose what they wish and I'll not denigrate another's right to chose - in fact I'll defend it - however, too many folks make choices based on bad information, fallacy and myth. If you're so concerned about the possibility of whipping a projectile thru the room of one of your offspring, take a knee and change the bullet path so that you minimize that happening. Perhaps think about defensive firearms use when designing your home and assigning bedroom space (how can I limit/control access to my kid's rooms, that kind of thing...).

I have seen a test posted on this site before (can't find it now, of course), done by one of the big self-defense / gun training groups down south (perhaps it was Massad Ayoob's group, I cannot remember) and the conclusions were that the optimal shotgun round for home defense was a 2-3/4" magnum load of #1 buck. Smaller shot sizes failed to penetrate deep enough to hit major organs (as shown in ballistic gelatin tests). Birdshot did produce horrific shallow wound craters that may or may not actually stop a determined assailant, but with no real penetration. #1 buck was chosen because it carried the most pellets for the highest probability of hits over 0, 00 or 000 buck, while still offering adequate penetration. The 2-3/4" magnum load was chosen because it carries a heavy shot load and produced lower velocities for more manageable recoil than 3" or 3-1/2" rounds and the lowest chance of penetration of walls and collateral damage to innocents.

If someone has a link to that test, please post it, I lost the link and would love to get it again.

Hypothetical question.

I used to own a S&W model 625 stainless .45 acp revolver which would do very nicely if you have large hands.

For home defence i have always favoured a revolver for various reasons, but it is a matter of personal preference really. Whatever you find comfortable and easy to shoot.

In the USA I would have a 1911 Colt Commander .45acp and a Colt Diamondback .38 special 4" barrel. My top choices for a personal sidearm.

I am young and have much to learn. I am not a expert by any means and have NO military training.

I live in apartment in the basement place is solid concrete. I have a unit on the southside of me. If I was in a home invasion senario first it would be more likely my gf would hear something and would wake me up. She would be dialling 911 and taking to them. A firearm is great tool but at close range 21 feet or less Ill go with the ka-bar and flashlight to blind my attacker. If my distance or threat level changes 1911 with hollow points in case I have fire on my southside. I would also use a shorty Ar-15 in 7.62mm again watching my southside.

To make sure of what? You miss the first shot, and blind yourself with the muzzle flash in a dark room, and the recoil is too much to get a follow up shot before the attacker is face to face. This is exactly the kind of weapon you don't want for home defense.

... but if you missed you still might set him on fire ...

PS - I'm pretty sure the poster was being facetious. You need to relax a bit, I think that you're over-thinking this whole thing. ;)
