Whats your long range hunting caliber?

I'm not a big longshot guy...don't shoot well enough:redface:. I have a 300 WSM in a savage with a Leupold vx2 3-9 that works well out beyond 200 yards.

Wow, reading these posts makes me think I gotta buy a better big game rifle.

My buddy back in Ontario who owned a gun store built me a custom rifle in 1986 from a 1942 6.5x55 swedish mauser. Military wood cut back to sporterize it, and the barrel cut back to 19 inches. welded on a curled bolt handle to clear the scope. Basicly a bush gun.
In `97 at the old St. Albert (Alberta) gun range I hit the 12" steel disc at 300 yrds on a breezy day with my rifle sighted in for 100 yrds. It took 11 shells (139 grain SP Yugoslav ammo) but I did it.
In the few years I deer hunted, that rifle got me 2 whitetail. Still have the rifle too btw.
This spring I bought a Ruger M77 MkII "Target" in .204 with an Elite 3200 4x12 for gophers. My best kill was at about 250 yrds. Its zeroed for 200 yrds using Hornady 32 grain VMax at 4225 fps. (game on )

Browning A-Bolt composite stalker 26" barrel in .300 Win Mag. Topped with B&L Elite 4000 3.5-10x40mm. Prints sub 1" 3 shot 100 yard groups. Will shoot as far as I'm willing to.

Remington 700 24" barrel in .264 Win Mag. B&L Elite 3000 4-12x40mmAO. Same as above.

Remington 700 in 300 Win mag.
190 grain BTSP bullets chronied at 2930 fps.
I hit a computer paper size target of Osama Bin Laden at 400 yds....nailed him in the left cheek......of his (ugly)face.
So I think it will work for deer size game at that distance if I absolutely had to....

Model 70 Classic, squared up and barrelled to 7 mm STW (.312" neck)by Ted Gaillard.David Tubb speed-lock and Jewel trigger. Factory wood stock Devconned, pillared and floated and a Leupold VX111 LR 4.5-14 X40m with B&C reticle. Long range or short, it's usually the first thing I reach for, and I've got plenty to chose from.

I use a .338 Winchester Magnum with 225gr loads. It has reached out and smoked bull elk at considerably farther than 300 yards. Leaves a hellava big hole through both shoulders too

Our range here only goes to 200yds, so I would guess that 300 would be about max for me.

Anything I own would do that. 30/06, 270WSM, 257Roberts.

Since quitting moose hunting a couple yrs ago I don't have much use for long range guns :( but I felt quite comfortable up to 300yds with my .280 Ruger, I would add another 100 or so providing conditions were good & a suitable rest of some sort was handy.

If I was going to stand hunt, then I'd drag out my 300 shortmag.
Since selling my long range hunting rig ( 6.5WSM) I'd probably have to sneak a tad closer and kill it with my 9.3X74R!:D

Long range rig

My main longrange rifle is a stainless/synthetic 700 Remmy in 7m/m RM. Have taken about 12 deer with 150 gr. handloads but 225 yards is the farthest I've had to reach (Manitoba). I've also started to carry a pre-64 M70 .300H+H, but havent taken anything yet. I live on Vancouver Island now but hunt the mainland and Alberta. If your considering anything larger than than a .300 WM, I'd suggest you try a buddy's RUM to see if you can live with the recoil. I used a .338 Winmag 700 Remington to flattened 2 Mulies last year, but never "bonded" with the rifle and sold it and returned to my trusty 7m/m.
Cheers and good hunting.
Geoff in Victoria.
