Whats your long range hunting caliber?

A-bolt Eclipse in 270 WSM with 140gr accubonds and Kahles C series 2.5X10, and alley rings and bases. It seems very promissing but have not ever taken and animal with a rifle usually ML,bow,X-bow.

My favorite is my 7mm rem mag with 154 gr hornady SST for caribou or smaller and Nosler 175 gr partition for moose or larger. Got my moose with the 175 grain Nosler at 250 yards this year. Remington 700 CDL 26" barrel
I feel very confident with this rifle. Scope is Leupold Rifleman 3 X 9 X 40

Large game - .338WM in a Tikka M695 , Leupold 2.5-8, 225gr Accubonds.
Medium game - .270WSM in a Savage 16, Leupold 4.5-14, 140gr Interlocks

Ok Ill post my long range gun up aswell.

Ruger M77 MkII 30-06sprg topped with a Bushnell 3200 5-15x40 pushing 180 grain Winchester Accubond CT.

Short range/open sight gun:

Mauser 98k in 308 win. Still playing with different ammo.

I would go with either 7RUM, .300RUM or .338RUM.
Also would consider .300Wea or .340Wea.

For moose I need something what at point of impact will give me 1800lbs of energy

My long range hunting cartridge is the 7mmstw.Driving a 140gr bullet at 3500fps,it shoots very flat and retains enough energy to cleanly take elk or moose at 500 yards.

This is the beatup old pig that sat beside me in the moose swamps this fall. She didn't get a chance to bark but bet yur ass she's capable of the job.
300 gr Interlock BTSP's @ 2625 fps sighted 2" high @ 100 hits 9" low @ 300 with more energy than quite a few other chamberings mentioned are capable of at the muzzle. That makes the Grand Old Moma a point and shoot out to 300yrds on a moose. Available in just about every rifle made today, yesterday and tomorrow the .375H&H is all you need. This rifle shot a .506 100yrd group during the sight in with that $20 scope sitting on it;)

Moose @300yards or a bit more.35 Whelan imp with a 200gr or 225 gr Barns tsx bullet @ over 2800fps.
and Hypothetcally if I had to shoot moose farther say 500yd and out then
338-300 ultra with 250gr bullet @ Approx 3000fps

Lots of nice rigs here, congrats to all of you :).

For me it's my Tikka Whitetail 7MMRM, topped with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x50 with 160gr Accubond, got a cow moose in 2003, 850ft, dropped her right there, and a moose at 40ft that did 200ft, go figure . This rifle also does good for long range whitetail with a 140gr BalTip, shoots flat enough for these field hunting day. Might try the 175gr bullets for moose next year, just to have an excuse to buy/load more bullets :D.

For use in North America, the best overall cartridge is the .30-06 which will take down any large game on the continent with a well placed shot. Factory ammunition is available vitually anywhere if your silly enough not to reload. The .30-06 really shows its versatility if you reload, it has over 60 plus different projectiles available for reloading. This way your rifle can be used for anything from Varmints to Large game efficiently. Most people that buy a larger caliber are just trying to get down range power to make up for piss poor marksmanship and lack of pre season practice.

If you reload you already know that .308 diameter bullets used in the .30-06 are interchangeable in the following calibers;

1) .300 Win Mag
2) .30-30
3) .300 Savage
4) .308 Win
5) .30-40 Krag
6) .300 H&H Magnum
7) .308 Norma Magnum
8) .300 Weatherby Magnum
9) 7.62mmX 54R (slug barrel first to verify)

I shot my bragging shot with a Remington M788 in .308 Win fitted with a Bushnel/Banner 4x scope fitted with a BDC. I was using Remington 150 grain Core Lokt. I was hunting on the prairies and only able to get within 450 yds. I got into the prone, snuggled up to the stock, dialed into 450 yards and gently squeezed. 6 pointer mulie buck, 1 shot, heart shot! He went straight down. I never started out hunting season unless I had fired a minimum of 200 rds in practice for that year. Practice, Practice practice.

300 yards and moose sized? just about anything 26 cal and up with a case capacity about the same as the 308 Win. - dan

My thoughts exactly. If I had to, I'd be totally comfortable shooting a moose at 3-400 yds with my 30-06, from a rested position.

With the LTR I recently sold, off the bi-pod I would have comfortably shot deer out to 500.

I'd almost always stalk closer though, but you don't need a howitzer to make a killing shot at those distances.
