Whats your long range hunting caliber?

Most people that buy a larger caliber are just trying to get down range power to make up for piss poor marksmanship and lack of pre season practice.

Most people who complain about magnum rifles are either afraid of recoil, just can't handle it or are too cheap to feed them. I use a Remington Sendero in 338 RUM topped with a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14 LR with the Boone and Crocket reticle. Before last year's moose season I had put over 200 rounds downrange with it and ended up taking a really easy shot of only 243 yards, though in the open farm country we hunt 1000 yard shots could be possible.

Lets say 300 yards for moose size game.

Given you CGN name, you already own the rifle:D. It's the optics that make the difference.

If you already have a load, then $$ optics with target turrets / Magnification / AO is the answer. Spend some (sorry, LOTS) of quality time at the range. Start recording the exact number of adjustment clicks required for a variety of known distances (a laser ranger is not an option but a neccessity).

I know that I am going to get smashed with "ya, buts" and "what ifs", generally when you take a poke at an animal at that distance, it is because you can't get any closer. Therefore the animal shouldn't be spooked. You will have ample oppurtunity to laser it, & dial in the correct elevation. It's windage thats the bee-otch. Only experience will overcome that.

When I say $$ optics, I mean beyond Tasco, Bushnell, and into Leupold, Millet, and other higher end stuff.

No point mounting a Tasco varmiter, or Bushnell Legend on a Remington Sendero 7mm STW if your intent is to go DOWNTOWN :).

300WM with 180gr Accubonds loaded with RL-22 and 270WSM with 140gr Accubonds loaded with Retumbo. Last season my wife with her 270WSM took her first bull moose @ 325m double lung with factory Winchester Supreme 140gr Accubonds.

Both of the Tikka T3 LS 270WSM rifles have the Leupold VX3 with BC reticles. The reticle system works great. My Sako m75SS 300WM was new in 1998 with a Leupold Vari-X III scope.

1000yds possible, sure, reasonable, no. I will guarantee that you need to get out of your truck or treestand and walk a little before you start thinking about 1000yd game shots (this may not have been your intention, but). I will guarantee your rig isn't setup for it.

For 300yds on moose, I'd start at the 260 Rem, and go up from there. Bullet construction is the key, and I beleive that a hole in the lungs kills far more than a math equation. If I was moving past 400yds I'd likely start with 7 WSM and move up from there.

Personally, I am very confortable with my .270 WCF and some Accubonds to about 450yds on a Moose.

Also I would say 1000 yard head start would be one hell of a search area if the Deer managed to wander off to die.

I saw a picture of some dudes from Alberta who claim that they hunt mulies with a .50BMG. I don't know. They were posing with their .50's and a dead mulie, that they claim was a 600 or 700 yard kill

I'ld believe it. 600-700yds is nothing for the 50 cal BMG....I've personally shot it to 1750 meters and hit a 45 gallon drum 5 out of 5 shots.

That is a long shot for sure. I know that the .50 will reach that far, I just think that you best be damn sure you know that you can make a clean, humane kill before you start shooting at long distances. Like with any hunting situation I guess, know your limits and know your shooting sticks limits.

Very good advice!

My long range caliber is PRACTICE... My only hunting rifle is a 308 Win. We have shot 2 liter pop bottles out to 500 meters at Springfield range in the Fredericton area of N.B....

This is the beatup old pig that sat beside me in the moose swamps this fall. She didn't get a chance to bark but bet yur ass she's capable of the job.
300 gr Interlock BTSP's @ 2625 fps sighted 2" high @ 100 hits 9" low @ 300 with more energy than quite a few other chamberings mentioned are capable of at the muzzle. That makes the Grand Old Moma a point and shoot out to 300yrds on a moose. Available in just about every rifle made today, yesterday and tomorrow the .375H&H is all you need. This rifle shot a .506 100yrd group during the sight in with that $20 scope sitting on it;)
