About 4yrs ago my older brother retired from the Military (RCHA) after 22yrs in Petawawa. He had hunted deer for many yrs and shot some nice big bucks.
His retirement gave him the first oppertunity to Hunt Moose with his 3 other brothers.
So off we headed to our camp a couple hrs North of T-Bay. It was thanksgiving morning, 3 of us were hunting an area with lots of moose sign between 3 small lakes the sunrise brought a lot of fog but it was one of those quiet mornings where you could hear for miles, There was a bull Moose somewhere close we could hear the grunts rumbling through the woods, needless to say all of us where waiting for this thing to come out somewhere close with competing cow calls. In the meantime we didn't relize Jim who is half deaf from his years behind the howis could hear what he thought was a moose moving up the ridge so Jim started to walk up a clearing next to some 6-7 ft alders. He heard a faint snap ahead and thinking this bull was going to come out in front of him he dropped to one knee turned his safety off and waited, and waited, nothing, he stood up and didn't hear/see anything so he turned to come back down the ridge, the Bull was standing 8' behind Jim :eek:Startled Jim pulled the trigger and blew a round into the ground.:p The moose didn't move so he got his composure and placed a perfect lung shot, the moose ran 20yds into the alders and dropped.
We heard the story of the kill from Jim which included the warning shot and we laughed for hours, now every year this story comes up. Some times you should just leave parts out of a story when telling your moose hunting party about the kill cause you know stories like this will never go away!
This is Jim with that nice Bull.

My brother was with my cousin while he was hunting whitetails. Both were around 15 years old. A big buck walked out at close range and stood there. My cousin aimed his model 94 30-30 and his hand was a blur while he worked the lever. He was shocked the buck didn't drop. All the cartridges were laying on the ground, bullets intact. He forgot to pull the trigger.
My brother had his turn too when he was a teenager. As he tells it, a huge buck walked out on a cut line and stood there about 25 yards away. My brother said he froze, couldn't move. The buck browsed for a while and wandered off in the bush.

Standing in a tree stand , terrain uneven, but wind in my favour, I noticed a 10 ft softwood about 40 meters in front of me , up on the other side of a ridge moving back and forth, 5 seconds later , here he come , 160 class , heavy mass, and wide. I was at the same height as the deer when I saw him.
Then he come down the side of the ridge, where he was now lower than I, and kept coming, I was frozen.
When he got 4 feet from the base of my tree , I was pretty much toast. He turn a bit to give me a perfect broadside , I tried to move my arms, and could only move the string on my 70# 66 inch Brakenbury a few inches:D
Not sure if it was the distance , or the time ,that messed me up , but I will never forget it :D
Great thread , its a part of hunting thats hard to beat.

I once shot at a caribou and missed, the caribou dodged up over a hill and I gave chase, as I crested the next hill he was in the valley,..I put up the gun but was so rushed and adrenalined that I needed to actually concentrate hard on my breathing,..by the time I calmed down, the caribou had jonted up the side and over the next barren... I gave chase... do you know where this story is going,:rolleyes:

I ended up chasing a caribou for about 5 miles, and finally realized I was not gaining on him. I had no idea how far I had gone until I turned around to walk back.

My Dad was back where I fired the initial shot, along with about 10 other hunters who came around after they heard the shot to see if we had got one.

Well they had a grande laugh watching the barrens in the distance...

"There goes the Caribou!!!, and there goes Michael"
"oh, theres the caribou again,..oh, and there goes Michael"

"There's the caribou, oh and theres Michael again"

I think Dad felt like he was out with his retarded son,...:D
