About 4yrs ago my older brother retired from the Military (RCHA) after 22yrs in Petawawa. He had hunted deer for many yrs and shot some nice big bucks.
His retirement gave him the first oppertunity to Hunt Moose with his 3 other brothers.
So off we headed to our camp a couple hrs North of T-Bay. It was thanksgiving morning, 3 of us were hunting an area with lots of moose sign between 3 small lakes the sunrise brought a lot of fog but it was one of those quiet mornings where you could hear for miles, There was a bull Moose somewhere close we could hear the grunts rumbling through the woods, needless to say all of us where waiting for this thing to come out somewhere close with competing cow calls. In the meantime we didn't relize Jim who is half deaf from his years behind the howis could hear what he thought was a moose moving up the ridge so Jim started to walk up a clearing next to some 6-7 ft alders. He heard a faint snap ahead and thinking this bull was going to come out in front of him he dropped to one knee turned his safety off and waited, and waited, nothing, he stood up and didn't hear/see anything so he turned to come back down the ridge, the Bull was standing 8' behind Jim
Startled Jim pulled the trigger and blew a round into the ground.
The moose didn't move so he got his composure and placed a perfect lung shot, the moose ran 20yds into the alders and dropped.
We heard the story of the kill from Jim which included the warning shot and we laughed for hours, now every year this story comes up. Some times you should just leave parts out of a story when telling your moose hunting party about the kill cause you know stories like this will never go away!
This is Jim with that nice Bull.
