When did folks become such recoil wimps?

You need to remember smaller rounds like 5.56 were designed to be controllable from lightweight rifles in full automatic, not 1 round at a time from a bench.

One of my CAS pals was a Team Roper for years. His preferred hunting rifle is a .243.

I bugged him about it and he told me that everything he shot with it (including moose) obligingly dropped dead, and he didn't like recoil.

Case closed.

I think that the plan worked. But you do have to smirk a little when you see the guy's with Poodle Shooters in the Sandbox getting pinned down by a LE or Dragunov.... out of range.

Notice; I said 'Smirk' not 'Smile'... it's not humorous...more like Ironic IMO

I like that description. This challenge of choice for caliber vs use actually went through my mind earlier today. My thought was that an appropriate mix in issued weapons and training would fill the gaps. The bigger the “Army”, the less likely it would be done efficiently though.

Ironically enough the 5.56 was designed so that 'Average Joe's' could manage them... here on CGN it sorta seems like it's the opposite. Black Vest Operators are badass because they can 'Rock out with a Poodle shooter'?

Yeah you always have a mix of weaponry, the M-16/M4 are the NATO equivalents of the AKM/ SKS the Dragunov would be more fairly compared against the M110/ SR25

I'm not sure, 30 years ago I used to think 7mm Rem Mag was heavy recoil... Now I would say that 416 Rigby would fit that bill for me...

Bottom line, I'd rather a guy shoot a 243 well, than a 300wsm poorly. Everyone's mileage will vary.

Cheers
Jay

Obligatory pic of my old Cadex Tremor in 50BMG, miss that rifle!

I still find 300 Win Mag heavy, I need a muzzle brake

Not exactly.

It was predominately logistical.
What a soldier could carry. And be resupplied easier.
A helo could carry a lot more 5.56 in to the jungle than 7.62

And regarding automatic fire... it entirely has to do with rate of fire and weight of the gun.

Hense why AK is easier to shoot auto than a C8.

Yes, us poor Fudds who have no bulletproof underwear or 5-round magazines the size of cricket bats are getting left behind...

Which begs the question of how much is recoil..how much is muzzle blast ...how bad was my stock design and how much was my eye too close to the scope.
And why am I scared wittless of anything bigger than a 243?

I can understand anyone with physical problems wanting lighter recoil. Totally get that point too.

I've also coached 110 pound women to shoot .338 Magnums and they do it well.
I never pushed them to 338's but they wanted to, and when you have a lady who want's to shoot the big bores who the heck am I to argue?

When you start trying for both accuracy and precision, recoil messes with you on extended sessions.

Even shooting a .22lr, you can develop a bit of anticipation flinch as you get used to the trigger. Even the target rifles that are bench toys only in .22lr suffer from it once your brain learns of the pressure point of release.

I love recoil :) but it can be a distraction from the 'need' to stack rounds in the same hole.

Didn't guys with Lee Enfields and Garands (and BARs and Brens) used to get pinned down by a well placed Kraut with a Mauser too?

No, its just that people are more honest. Sure in the old days people said they could handle their 308s and 3006, but most of them actually could not without flinching.

Sometimes it can look that way!

My first brand new rifle bought with my first job was a 300 WM. I *thought* I was a pretty dang good shot, thank you very much! It put meat in the freezer, right?

As long as we were talking a 10" circle not past 100 yards :)

Grew into it. But at first I mighta been kiddin myself a weeeee bit

I love handloading that way. Let's back the power off for the 1st box; get used to it then start the journey towards 'Primer Flow'...then back it off ( Exaggerating here a tad).
I've a 9.3 x 57 in a 98 ( I know, ream it to 9.3 x 62 ) that is damn brisk to shoot.
Really want to 'Put it out on the table' and get my 8 x 57 reamed out to 8 x 63...see if I'm still so cocky...but a finding a reamer, then sourcing someone to do it...PITA.

I've been trying to find a 8 millimetre Yugo Mauser I've been shooting one with a buddy but his is Brazilian sloppy as hell I just need to wait for a cheque to clear and I have $400 to put towards it, I'm interested to see what it does on a moose
