When in doubt, grab the 270!

I'm not sure how to take the fact that everyone is assuming that I will be the first to jump on the free invite...

But, Spank and Bigbubba, pack your bags...

Not insinuating anything about it being free Hoyt so much as the opportunity to go down under and kill something exotic in an exotic land. The price is just a bonus that's for sure!

I'm saving for a coastal grizzly and goat at the moment... everything else is on the backburner... except local biggame of course.

My second centerfire rifle was a Sako in .270W (a friend insisted I buy that calibre - so I did because I didn't know squat about hunting calibres) .. I have never regretted it..... have collected a few others over the years (unnecessarily) one of them shoots very well with the 160gr Partition -- pretty fast and pretty accurate. Although I dont know how you could ever improve on the performance of the Corelock you chose!!
Congratulations - it was an exceptional shot!

Great story AP, im starting to think of a stouter projectile to use incase a big brute offers a shot in a stalking 'spook and shoot' scenerio. I have done it with Cup an Core corelokts & super x, although would haveore confidence in a 150gr , and i dont suppose with a bit more practise 300m and even 400m wouldnt be out of the league of the Winchester .270!

Would like to put that forth as a Question to the gurus.

Im thinking hornady? As i think the 150gr CL is a RN type.. i would need a pointy.

2ndly is the expensive Accubond 140gr...

Any other projectiles worth a look, preferably not premiums ☺

Thanks for all the replies, it was a great hunt and one good outcome.

Apprrciate the feedbacl and glad to give you guys an insight of how an Aussie bushkid goes about Hunting our Premier game Animal.

Cheers

Hornady does offer a 150 grain interlock SP as well as an SST bullet, Seirra is a good one too in my opinion. Are Woodleigh bullets any cheaper in the land down under?

"I have just become such a fan of the .270 Winchester!" Yeah, you and a lot of other people around the world, including the late Jack O'Connor who shot just about everything it made sense to shoot with a .270.
I have a beaut of a Husqvarna .270 I have rarely shot since I blew up the front quarter of a small Mule Deer at 75 yds with it. It's rare that I'm offered a shot around here much beyond 100 yds.
Might use it with 150 gr RN if I get a moose draw this year.

Mate i seen a Lion shot with a 150 partition not long ago, forget where i seen it but il try find the Safari in which the Hunter used a .270 for i think Eland some plains game and a bloody Lion!

WL interesting read as always.
It is always cool to find that bullet when the work begins too.
I think any gun in your hands does its job,, be it a wsm or just a good old Winchester round of yore .
Tight Groups and Tenderloins on the BBQ.

Excellent hunt and write up!

Just purchased a .270 myself for deer and moose, on the advice of some very learned hunting buddies....cannot wait to get my second buck this fall! ;)

A big lion usually weighs a bit less than 500 pounds, so should be well within the .270's performance envelope, but a long and bloody history dictates it doesn't pay to be disrespectful of these big cats by using little rifles, or by being indifferent to your bullet placement. If you intend to use your .270 for some of the heavyish critters you have out your way, like buffalo, feral cattle, camels and such, you might want to consider a fast twist barrel, and some 180 gr Woodleighs. I tried them in my son's .270 Hawkeye, but they didn't stabilize in the 1:10; I'd like to try them in a 1:8. The kids nowadays are all about speed, but at one time the "go to" bullet for Canadians going after moose, elk, and big bears with a .270 was a 160 KKSP or a Partition, and IMHO, it remains a top choice. CIL loaded the .270/160 KKSP in factory ammo as well as as a loading component, which didn't hurt it's popularity.

Thanks Boomer but jumping the gun a little bit so to speak :)

The Whelen takes care of Australias Big Game , buffalo included.

The partition is certainly up there with a commonly used heavy pill in the .270. just shows how capable it is and the variety of projie from 110 varmint to the 160 partition, almost everything covered, if need be.

berger, fltch and dirtycurty Appreciate the feedback! Thanks!

I still have a box or two of the CIL/Dominion 160 gr .270 ammo.

WhelenLad,

I have posted this a number of times here, as many will remember. I have killed, and seen killed, a lot of big game over the past fifty+ years, using many different cartridges from 243 to 375 H&H. It is my distinct impression that I have seen more one shot kills from the 270 Winchester than any other.
