When will I be able to buy the 6.8 western?

I wish these rifle/ammo companies would stop the marketing hype, and trying to re-invent the wheel. The .270 is a great round, it doesn't need a little brother.

and stop wasting time , money and resources trying to "reinvent the wheel" when they can't manufacture time proven ammo fast enough to meet demand as it is.

if i was a shareholder of the company i'd be pissed

Olin stock has gone from $8.76 to $29.00 since July 2020 due to the demand for their products. If you were actually a shareholder you would be quite happy I would think.

I can't see the western gaining a foothold. The .270 wsm ticks a lot of boxes that the western ticks. Granted, the western ticks a few more but enough to gain a following? I have my doubts. I still hold out hope for a rebirth for the 7mm wsm but I dare say it will never happen.

The one thing I really like about the Western is that maybe finally someone will start making a quick twist barrel. I've tried to build a 270 with a 1-9 and even companies that say they make it don't.

I think its an interesting round. I would hold off just to see if it becomes popular. Over the last 20 years there have been tons of new rounds that pretty much impossible to find ammo for. WSSM for example. That was a waste of my money! 300 WSM and 6.5 CM are the two big ones that stand out to me that are sticking around.

it would be similar. The Western *should* have a little more case capacity than the SAUM, guesstimating though - since I haven't been able to find find any H2O measurements on fired 6.8 brass posted online yet.

You could call it the 7mm Saum Improved maybe

Don't know if this was posted yet

204 Ruger is less than 20 years old, so is the 375 Ruger. 6mm CM has gained a foothold, and 6.5PRC looks to be here to stay too, those are both far newer than the Rugers. So there are at least a handful of stuff that has managed to stick around. Of course, as you point out there are always things like the WSSMs that did not survive.

I think it'll all come down to whether this can bump off the 270WSM or not. I just can't picture the market being big enough for both, and I'm hesitant to believe the Western offers enough for those who have picked the WSM to switch - I wouldn't be surprised if the whole reason a lot of them picked the WSM is the velocity it gets, and if thats the case I can't imagine a lot of them will be looking to go with a slower cartridge even if it has better ballistics at 500yds.
