When will I be able to buy the 6.8 western?

There wasn't much love for the wsm's, I remember cause I got my wsm in 2007. I thought I was getting the best one of the bunch with the 7mm wsm, little did I know, lol. I still think it was the better choice.

It always amaze me that gunnutz get all pissy at new cartridges!?

There is nothing wiz-bang about any of the new cartridges, especially the 6.5 Creedmoor. Moreover, I love the older cartridges: 300 H&H, 30-06 Spring, 270 Win, etc. They have proven themselves lightyears ahead of new cartridges.;););)

It's funny how when the 270 WSM was introduced almost 20 years ago everyone was yelling "A new 270? Meh, who needs it? Better stock up on brass, it won't be here for long" and now when discussing another new cartridge people are talking about how the WSM is better and has easy to obtain brass.

Laugh2

I only made the comparison after somone mentioned they were going to undo all the benefits to the 6.8 by using a slow twist barrel, but I see the irony.

If in 20 we’re still allowed to own guns, and the 6.8 western is as successful and commonplace as the 270 WSM, I will eat my hat.

Your hat is probably safe... but as much as I am not a huge .277 fan, I like this NEW 6.8 Western... I won't be getting one, but I get it... as for the WSM's, always been a fan, particularly the 7mm.

I don't have the feeling that it will be a super popular success. Some cartridges are easy to spot as big winners when introduced- like 300WSM, 270 WSM, 6.5 Creed and 375 Ruger.

The 6.8 Western is an impressive cartridge but I'm not convinced the average hunter is going to understand what it has going for it. Plus when they hear "Six Point Eight" there may be plenty of blank stares. :)

Hopefully I am wrong though.

I hear you. I think most people who are concerned with the intricacies of twist rates and throating for OAL with high bc bullets will probably just stick to building their custom saums, and those who aren’t are plenty well served with the WSMs in standard form.

That's my gut feeling too. Also, plenty of people that recognize the attributes of the 6.5Creed but want a bit more are probably gravitating towards the 6.5 PRC which has a significant head start than the Western. Sometimes a head start can really tip the scales.

Just look at how long it’s taking for the 270 Winchesters head start to wear off!

I also find it kind of interesting that Winchester decided to start chambering the PRC this year along side the 6.8 western....seems like they’re undermining themselves.

I find it is an interesting round, but right now I think what I would do since I think my next rifle would be a custom rifle it to build on in 270wsm. I would just get the twist rate of the barrel to handle the higher bc heavier bullets they are coming out with. Then you have the popularity of the 270wsm, but able to handle the heavier bullets.

Will it fit in a short action?

The 6.8 has 0.907" projectile sticking above the case mouth @ SAAMI spec. Matching that with a 270 WSM would give an OAL of 2.997"

This is definitely one reason why I suggest working with a knowledgeable gunsmith to try and figure everything out to give you the best solution. I know with the popularity of cartridges like this and the 6.5prc, 7saum and such from what I understand you can find some actions that are almost more of a medium action, to give you a bit more length.
I think one thing I would like to do is be able to change the barrels out on the build so I can play with a few different cartridges on the one build. I was talking top a gentlemen at the rifle range a few weeks ago that was changing out barrels every 10 or 15 rounds on his rifle. It was super easy to change and gives a person lots of options.
