where are the single shots??

I've got the Henry, the trigger feels good, open sites are good for me out to a 100 yards, haven't sent it for the recall yet. I really like it, will be using it for moose this fall.

My "cheap" single shot is a NEF in 22 hornet flavour
My other cheap single shot is a Martini originally in 303 that a coworker traded for a Cooey becaue he needed
Something to shoot skunks with that was quiet. I have since had it redone into 219 Zipper by PGW when he
still did gunsmithing for the public. Still need to do so e finishing touches on it.
Not so cheap are Ruger #1's in the 303 and 458 chamberings. I like them, but that 303 has such an oversize bore...

I picked a B-78 in 30-06 about 8 years ago. It turned out to be the most accurate 06 I have ever owned! It prints about half the groups it shots in the .600”- .800” range. Every now and then it will print a single cluster on the target! Love it! With the glass smooth action, these high walls are in a class all their own.

First one I bought was a 1V in 22-250, then another #1 , with a Canjar, set up for Schuetzen in 32-30Rem, then I got an 1885 in 22-250, built it into a 32-40 as a Schuetzen rifle, those are all gone now. Still have an 1885 Browning in 223 from around 1990/91, and a Stevens 044-1/2 action I built a 218Bee on, and an 1887 300Rook on an H&H sidelever action. I picked up a new Win 1885 in 300H&H, the "Safari Special", and a Merkel K1 in 7RM around 8-10 yrs ago, about 3 yrs ago I picked up a new #1A in 7-08. I've had some really good luck with the ones I've bought, and a hell of a pile of fun.

My first single shot was Browning B-78 rechambered to 270 Wby. Shot tiny little groups!
Next was a 1885 Low Wall in 223 that I was hoping to redo as a 221 Fireball. Never got to it and had to sell to pay for other priorities. Still hope to have one, one of these days! Looking to buy one in 22 Hornet from a friend. Beautiful rifles!
Had a Lipsey's No.1 RSI in 257 Roberts, that is now the wife's...she loves the quarter bores! (She also has a Lipsey's No.1 in 250 Savage)
Wish Ruger would build the RSI in 358 Win! Or 338 Federal.

What do you shoot out of it? I just bought one.

Freedom group killed NEF. Then you have what amounts to rather overpriced firearms; Browning, Ruger, Thompson center, the copies of the old Buffalo guns and high/low walls.

It was a cheap alternative to try different calibers. Now it's boutique guns, for people with entirely too much time and money.

The prices being asked for them are ridiculous when Henry and CVA guns are on the market.

I have tried to love the handi rifle several times; the only one I really cared for was a 500 S&W I let go for a reasonable price at the start of covid m, presumably it’s new owner will sell it in a couple of years and retire.

Like you say that one was all about playing with the cartridge; I was loading slightly over book and the velocities were amazing. I’m shocked there aren’t more rifles in the chambering for straight wall states. I took it moose hunting a bunch but never connected. Even a 2 inch group looked impressive with those half inch holes.

I’d take almost any other single shot in 500 S&W over the H&R though, a ruger no 1 with an 18 or 20 inch barrel would be amazing

I have an H&R Officers Model Repro, an original infantry 1873, another 1873 in pieces I'm planning to make into a 30/30 and a Martini project I've been planning to finish someday. I have a Number One Ruger in 30-303 Epps with a home made 1/4 rib on a Douglas barrel. I like single shots. I put together a 260 Remington on a single shot Sako as a slim, light, mountain rifle. Shoots real well and nice to carry but needs checkering and I just haven't gotten around to it (is there a theme here?). Maybe this year.

I have one that few have heard of - Mossberg SSi-ONE in .223. I picked up extra barrels for it in .243 and 12ga 3.5" rifled and ported. I find it has less kick than my other 243 and 223. Now looking for a 22-250 barrel for it.

Here’s my Ruger No1 in .358 Winchester, and yes it’s a custom barrel. Works great to :)
