Just curious, why so short? I don't think they make one under 20"...

Lol funny ! Are we allowed todo that??? I seen on there website a 16 inch rem 700 ... And I figured why not? I like the idea of a tactical rifle but I'm not shooting more than 200 yards EVER and 308 isn't really a long range cartridge by my standards so why not get the smallest one I can buy a long barrel would make more sence in a more capable cartridge why take a 600-800 yard round and try to stretch it to a 1000 just buy a 300 win mag or somthing that is supposed todo a 1000 yard shots but that's just what I was thinking you tell me... And I'm pretty sure even with a 16 in barrel I should be ok out to 500 yards easy

Well, I suppose the folks at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply might be able to get a barrel for you.

I just picked up an SPS Tactical- AAC SD. Pretty sure it has a 20" barrel.

Got ya! That seems fair. I've seen guys shoot very successfully out to 550m with a 20" barrel. A 16" would be sweet for a few reasons (truck gun, backpack, etc.), but I still prefer the longer 26" barrels...

Also, thanks hometown, I looked at the Remington site and it wasn't on there... Must've been a special run?

Thanks man Im going to give them a call... I'd like to see some comparisons between the 20 inch and the 16 I'm thinking 20 might not be so bad now

"...figured why not?..." Enormous muzzle blast and noise. Loss of velocity, etc, etc. There's no such thing as a 'tactical rifle' either. It's a marketing term and nothing more.

There is a reason that Remington stopped making the Rem 600 Mohawk....short little 308 carbines kick like a mule, make a big flinch causing flash and loose a lot of velocity.
If you want one of those I know where you can get one.

I guess with the "tacticool" market of today such charactoristics in a rifle don't matter so much as being cool looking...form over functionality has prevailed.

Huge amount of BS in his thread.....

while I can't speak of the Remington, I have two Rugers with the 16.5" tube (.308 and .338 Fed) and LOVE them. They don't kick any harder than a 20 or 22", shoot just as well (although I've only stretched mine to 400 yards) and they are DAMN handy in the thick stuff.

If you shorten the barrel, you lighten the gun. If you lighten the gun, you increase perceived recoil. - dan

If there weren't such things as mountain profiles, medium contours, standard profiles, sporter profiles, heavy profiles, super heavy profiles, fluting, etc....you *might* have a point....but even then, only by a couple of ounces... Not enough to make a lick of difference in all but the heaviest bench rest barrels.

For some folks, that's all the difference. As to the different barrels etc, lets assume for a second that we are comparing two firearms that are identical except for barrel length. What's the weight per inch of barrel? I seem to recall reading somewhere it was roughly one ounce per inch on a varmint barrel, so chopping 10" off going from 26" to 16" should lighten your rifle up about 10 ounces. That would be noticeable to most folks I think. I've never found short barrelled 308's that bad (the muzzle blast and noise were much worse then the recoil), even used a 15" 308 back when silhouette was a popular sport.

Back to the OP, cut the barrel and recrown the muzzle, and give it a whirl. If you don't like it it will give you an excuse to rebarrel. - dan
