Where can one Purchase a Elcan c79?

I like Elcan, I'm looking at the Specter DR, it's like a suped up version of what the troops use.

Illuminated red dot OR crosshairs!!! X1 OR X4 magnification!!! :D

About $1800!!!

I dunno, but I really like it...

Oh.... I know Target Sports Centre has the SpecterDR, maybe thay can order the
SpecterOS3.4x?

SpecterOS 3.4 Optical Sight runs $1,320.00 and is @ 2 to 4 week delivery

My first reaction was similar....

WHY OH WHY would people want the Elcan that many a troop don't care for.
We don't care for it because most the ones serviced become junk quickly from carelessness and misuse by troops. I can agree I generally don't like it much, especially the cheap rail screws, however I once (and only once) got a chance to use a brand new one. Loved it. Of course wasn't brand new after I got through with it, but like my rifle, I keep it clean and maintained. Never had a problem with it.

What I like about the C79A2 is that it has good eye relief/sight picture (no squinting necessary) and a good reticle. Besides the shabby mount, the optic is housed nicely and is actually rather durable/rugged when it comes to adverse conditions and handling.

So it's sort of a love/hate relationship. I honestly just prefer iron sights, but the Elcan is ok in my books and some day I plan to own one. I've got enough practice zeroing, adjusting, and jury rigging them that I'm already greatly proficient. And since I won't be stomping on it in a snowbank, or doing pepper-potting through dead ground, I don't think I'd be too worried about it crapping out on me so soon. Then again, I guess we'll see (if I ever acquire one).

I remember when I was a swing in Wainwright on a QL3 infantry course. I signed out 16 c-9s for training. These weapons and optics had all been ATI'd before being issued to me. First day on the range, shooting the PWT, 14 C-79 sights were broken.

On the range...shooting PWT...not in the field...shooting badguys

They're junk. Will always be junk. Nice glass, but crap hardware.

It's not a matter of if it will break, just when.

negligence and abuse by troops... Really? Wow. Do elaborate. I'm on the edge of my seat.

LOL, true enough. That definitely sounds like a bad batch. Though, I've always honestly thought that equiping a C9 with a C79 is just stupid. You don't need it to hit your targets, AoE weapon, and most gunners will usually only aim with their tracers. Iron sights are good enough. Especially during OBUA/FIBUA. Only on ranges is the C79 on a C9 used much. Useless.

Optics can be useful to ID potential tgts to ensure you are actually engaging enemy...

Not saying the C79 is the ideal optic for that but to dismiss optics on a MG, especially when dealing with long distance engagements in rural areas of Afghanistan is ridiculous.

I'm not dissing optics, I just believe something else should be equiped on the C9 than the C79. Could still be Elcan, but perhaps a better model with better open vision relief (for close engagements), solid mounting supports and decent battle sights.

You stated 'negligence and abuse'. Strong words.

I have seen dozens and dozens of C79's crap out. Wasted countless hours on ranges trying to get guys zeroed. And that's just during training, exercises and ranges. Never once did I see anyone go out of his way to damage it in a negligent or abusive way.

What 'negligence' did you observe?

What do you qualify as 'abuse' when it comes to your primary sighting system for your weapon? Use? Training? Combat? Stepped on, dragged along the ground and bashed around in vehicles and aircraft?

Sorry, no chuck norris inserts here buds, just looking for a straight answer.

I don't understand why anyone would spend their own hard earned money to get a C79 for their own personal firearm. It's one thing to be issued one, but to CHOOSE to get one is a different matter.

I didn't say anything about anyone going out of their way to damage their Elcan. I just meant in the general sense. During QL2, QL3 you would protect your rifle as though it were your balls. Afterward, most troops (including seasoned) loosen their regard for the weapons' well being under the mentality of "it's not yours so who cares". This may be in a very minor way, but exists nonetheless. I've heard/seen stupid things people do with their rifles (like blank-firing flashbangs off the muzzle, for example). I always think "if they owned it, would they still do that?".

Anyway, I guess the mistake I used here was in the diction. "Negligence and abuse" I suppose is a little too strong depending a certain point of view. So instead I changed it to carelessness and misuse. Much better, yes?

Oh, and my bad for the Chuck Norris. Heard a good joke yesterday and I couldn't get him outta my head. :p

These weapons and optics had all been ATI'd before being issued to me.

Wow they managed to pass an ATI meaning they were C79s and the serial numbers were checked against what the unit was supposed to hold. From what I have witnessed ATI is not a true inspection it is more of a stock check exercise. Trashed bases, dead tritium, internaly fogged optics lack of required upgrades... all pass ATI.

My C7A1 passed ATI and was missing its flash hider and had handguards held together with guntape.

As for abuse I have seen rifles thrown into and out of trucks, dropped, stepped on, kicked, piled 20 high, fired on auto till the barrels glow, and my personal favorite now that we use the POS accuwedge, Step 1 put your C79 on the ground and kneel on the lower so you can push the take down pin out with ease (just like you were taught on BMQ). Step 2 complain that your optic will not hold zero.
