Kinda a weird question I know some places in the states offer this but curious if anyone has seen it this side of the boarder.

I recently had back surgery so I’m getting mentally prepped and planned out for spring/summer load development.

I have a new 308 win 1:10 twist rifle that I’ve put together over my injury and shot a bit before I went under for the disc slice. ( it’s a pristine sa action receiver with a heller arms semi bull barrel similar profile to tikka varmint and what they call an ev-5, in a GRAYBOE eagle pro rifle stock. It has a trigger tech r700 special trigger that hasn’t been adjusted just yet with a m5 GRAYBOE bottom metal and use either 3 or 5 end mdt polymer mags at this point but will likely get a couple ,teal mags for longer coal)

The best group I managed was a 5 shot at about .7/.8 of an inch at 100 yards. I would like to see better and I was pretty sure it was ammo choice/projectile. This is factory Geco .308 win target 147gr. Got some in a good deal and figured it was an easy way to get some rounds down the tube and have some spare brass.

I have 168gr Sierra MK but that’s it so far. I will be loading Palma brass in this case as well. I’m slowly grabbing powders when they come available close to me.

So besides the 168 MK I was thinking of playing with some 175s and 180s see as it’s a faster twist barrel. I’m also good with mix and matching different projectiles and weights so I could do 168s in MK and Eld-m on top of others. The downside is I don’t really see this being offered outside of buying a box of 50 or 100.

Is it possible to get a multi pack from somewhere with say 30+ of each projectile or should I just buy boxes and sell left overs that don’t work ?

My goal is two things I want to develop a nice target load that will hold sub .5” so I can test my skills and get out to decent ranges 500-1000 yards say. A the second will be a hunting load but I’m sure Barnes will shoot fine when I load them or accubonds as I’ve never really had issue with either.

Cheers,
B

No multi packs that I am aware of. Might try buying partial boxes on the ee, that could get you some samples without buying full boxes. - dan

There is no multipack….I don’t see a need for it. Pick up good components that are available and test with one or two powders. In .308 there is so much data out there and known good combination that it is a waste of time to try a bunch of bullets that might not be avail anyway down the line.

A few years back a store in Grande prairie was selling 10 or 15 count packs of Hornady and noslers, they were in a green and black pack so they do or did exist at one point
Edit, these are the packs I seen, 12 bullets per pack.

That was Primetime but not sure if they still sell them.

Hey all,

Appreciate all the info shared and it’s definitely coming in handy. I will watch EE and see what comes up from others. I know some said just follow a proven load but that’s not as easy when some powders aren’t on shelves near me. I will be starting with Ramshot Tac which has mixed reviews from people online. As it was on clearance so I got a few pounds cheap.

I have 168s and will watch for 175s ish to come up for sale. I see some Hornady ones on sale for boxing week locally so I may just grab them while at a decent price.

I appreciate the info.

OP, are you the loner type??? NO DISS INTENDED.

If you are, that makes things more difficult.

If you know a few people that shoot the distances you wrote about, then talk to them about picking up some of their bits or partial boxes of bullets, so you can get an idea of what your rifle likes.

I'm not a fan of "mixed packs" of powder or bullets.

If you're so financially stressed that you can't afford to pick up several different bullet designs, even in the plentiful amounts at gunshows and often at local gunshops, then you're definitely in the wrong/unaffordable shooting game.

Long range shooting is an expensive luxury sport. It requires a lot of time as well as capable rifles and accessories.

If you're thinking of such shooting for hunting, for most shooters I've met, it's just unethical in the extreme.

There just aren't enough bullets in those "multi packs'' to develop any sort of impression on which one your rifle will shoot best and IMHO will just lead you down a blind hole.

Hitzy gave you some really good advice. If you have a rifle capable of good accuracy out past 300 yards, then depending on such things as twist rate, you can decide on a bullet design that was developed for what you have.

With decent primers costing anywhere from 25 cents to 50 cents apiece you will likely cringe every time you pull the trigger.

I was speaking to a fellow last night, over Christmas dinner, about this.

He's a Long Range Shooter, who no longer shoots.

He recently retired and the last components he purchased was just before the Covid bomb dropped.

He's not cash strapped per se', but he just can't bring himself to pull the trigger on shots into paper, at 500-1000yds, that are costing him $3 per shot, not including the cost of getting to the range, etc.

He sold off all of his paraphernalia when gun shows started up again and only has a few hunting rifles left.

He doesn't even bother to hand load any longer.

He isn't alone, lots of people can no longer afford ammunition or new firearms at the present prices.

My advice to you is to do some due diligence, on your own, determine the twist rate of your rifling and the bore diameter of your rifle.

Then, determine how good the parallax adjustment, if any, is in your scope.

Usually, if your rifle's bore diameter is right on spec, and you've matched your projectile's weight and length to it, a good starting load can be found to develop from.

You need fireformed cases of consistent capacity as well.

And the list goes on and on.

Good luck in your search, find a mentor if possible.

None taken. I appreciate the information. An have most answers for some of the questions you posed I should be asking myself so it’s good to know I am on the right path.

I just like to be efficient so that’s why I am after multi packs. Think like those Rimfire testers that Tesro does, 100 of each and 5 different types or even 50 of each 5 types would be great.

Sadly my back injury has made it impossible to go to gun shows even locally as driving and walking was very painful so glad I will able to do that within 6 weeks.

I do want to clarify this will be nothing more than practice and trigger time as I don’t personally hunt at those distances this is strictly for target work. No unethically hunting will be taking place.

Also nobody within my hunting or shooting group shoots longer than 300 yards and once healed I plan to try and make some new local friends who are into long range shooting that I can practice with or learn from as I will be able to attend events and go shooting again.

B
