Hey guys,

I'm getting close to buying my first sharps rifle and want to shoot only real black powder in it.

It will be 45-70. I have a couple other 45-70's but I shoot smokeless and hard cast in them.

So where do you guys buy your black powder? Can it be bought over the phone or online and shipped without paying an arm and a leg?

I'm south of calgary, so if you know of any stores in alberta that sell that would be great!

Thanks.

Wholesale has been pretty bad on powder for the last year. Last time I was there I think I saw some 777 and some obscure Vhit powders but not much else.

BP is harder to obtain because of the additional regulations surrounding it's commercial storage. I my experience it's best to call ahead because only a small amount of powder is kept near/in the retail location, the remainder kept in an off-site magazine. Just because a store stocks regular smokeless, pyrodex or 777 powder does not mean they are set-up to retail BP

I have had good results with Vihtavuori, they are recommended by Lapua.

WSS to the best of my knowledge does not stock BP, only BP substitutes. Try contacting some one from your local Muzzleloading or BPCR group at your local clubs. They will know who has it locally. Good luck....

Order it online from Cabela's (ya the Canada one) and pick it up in store to save the hazmat fees.

They carry 2F, 3F and 4F Goex - $36/pound.

Rayn'er Shine Gun Works in Lancer, SK. 306-689-2783. They are the Canadian distributer for Swiss and Scheutzen powder. They travel to gun shows, I got 10# from then at the Brandon, MB show, in Dec. Also, Bilozir Fine Guns, south of Calgary someplace. 403-938-6066. They had Goex. Black is getting really hard to find.

Give a call to Becky at Hillfolk Musket Supplies, Senlac, SK. She always has a good supply of black powder and other reloading supplies. They are located south of Lloydminster, just on the Saskatchewan side.

Cabela's in Winnipeg stocks GOEX, the only "real" blackpowder in my books.

I shoot a replica 1728 St-Étienne flintlock and use a mix of FF and FFF to ensure reliable ignition. I preload paper cartridges with 100 grains of this mix and this gives me enough for the pan AND the main charge.

Bilzor had some at the Lethbridge gun show 3 days ago. Not sure what his prices are but he's good to deal with.

If you can wait until the Easter gun show in Calgary there's at least 2 vendors I expect to see there who will have some at reasonable prices. Don't support the crooks asking $40/lb.

There was plenty of BP at the Calgary gunshow in January - so if you can wait - the Easter gunshow would be my choice

I will probably do that but I wanted to get an idea where to look as well. Sounds like there are a few places that aren't too far away. For those of you that have ordered and had it shipped, what are the shipping and hazmat fees like?
