Very good words from "NormB".
If yoy intend to "go long" then it might be a good choice based on the caliber of your rifle and the scope you purchase for it. If the scope has limited adjustment and you intend to spend some time chuckin on a long distance range then you might need a sloped base. If you intend to shoot mainly in the closer ranges then it is not needed.
Some scopes, for instance, come from the factory with lots of adjustment, IE: Nightforce 3.5-15x50 NSX has 110MOA total elevation), others have less. Top quality names such as Schmidt Bender, US Optics, Nightforce, Leupold, and others all have lots of elelvation adjustment. some still more than others but the scope itself will go a long way without a canted base. If you had a scope with a total of 60MOA elevation, for example, you would most likely need to add a sloped base if you were planning on using that equipment to say 1000 yards.
Keep in mind that there are manufactures who make canted bases in 10 MOA increments so you not just stuck with a 20MOA base.
Good luck!
