Wholesale in the peg is your best bet right now if you're looking for a shooter, not something that will be ultra collectible down the road. By the time you factor in shipping its one of the better deals you'll find. I got one after Christmas for $189, I think the new batch they're asking about $220. FYI Cabelas had a pile of Romanian surplus in for just over $300. Canada Ammo is a touch cheaper with free shipping if you don't mind waiting a few days.
I'd have to agree with kennymo.
Cabela's has some Russian SKS's in that are going for $299.99 and they are "handpicked" to be sold in the store. I bought my SKS on Saturday from Wholesale Sports and I paid $223.99 after taxes ($199.99 before). It's a Russian made SKS from 1954 with all matching serial numbers throughout the gun, never fired, never issued, covered in cosmoline and an overall joy to clean and use the next day. My girlfriend loved the look of the gun and the grain in the wood - so she didn't even get mad when I walked in to buy a box of .303 ammo and walked out with the gun
I believe the best bet for local surplus ammo for the SKS (7.62x39) is at the Xtreme Gun Shooting Center located at 141 Larche Ave. E. in Transcona. I bought a crate of ammo from them for just under $305 (taxes included) and I believe there was 1320 or 1340 rounds in the case. It's corrosive, so you have to clean the gun right away but it's worth it for the price you pay.
Hope this helps!

. JimDo did mention Weimajack (and I misspelled it...again). Anyhoo, I have made several purchases from Jacques and he gets the finest hands down, and he's great to deal with to boot!
