Which 10/22 Barrel?

I am currently searching for a new barrel for my 10/22. My primary objective is to increase the accuracy of my rig. I am looking for a barrel with the following specifications:

-16 inches in length
-Bentz chamber
- Fairly lightweight. This rifle will be carried when hunting. Doesn't have to be super light. I am hoping for a barrel as light or lighter than the stock 18.5 inch barrel.
-Fairly accurate. Does not need to win bench rest matches or anything but does need to achieve headshots on grouse from 40-50yrds.

I am leaning towards the Tactical Solutions x-ring barrel. Does anyone own one of these? I have not been able to find a physical weight listed anywhere. I am assuming that since they are aluminum they are relatively light weight. Also how durable are the tacsol barrels? Is the chamber face chrome moly? I am concerned about long term damage from the bolt driving home. How is the accuracy? If someone was to get carried away dumping mags would they have a problem?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It seems the majority of aftermarket barrels for the 10/22 are bull barrels and are longer than 16inches.

Accurize the guy behind the trigger first. You need a baseline for comparison. The stock barrel will probably shoot just great for field work. No bench rest set up, shooting offhand or off a tree/ fencepost, how good can you shoot????

I just upgraded to a tacsol barrel. Wow light and alot less loud than my 8" dlask barrel!
Groups grea and with an axiom stock, My gun is 3.5lbs, 3.75 with a trs-25 rds!
I was looking for a magnum research carbon barrel. 13oz but couldn't find one in Canada.
Tacsol barrel is 15oz. More info on rimfire central.

Thanks but that's not what I asked

If the rifle cant reliably hit a golf ball at 50 yds bench rest how is it suppose to hit a grouse's head reliably at 50yds offhand?

If I miss I want it to be my fault.

You say the rifle can't shoot straight. Have some one else shoot it. Scope or irons? How long has it been a poor performer??? A lot of information missing to give an informed solution to your problem. Thowing stuff at it before you know why doesn't make any sense.

Seriously? Really?

I did not ask about what the problem with the stock rifle was. I have spent a lot of time testing the accuracy of the rifle. Do you have any suggestions for a barrel that meets my specifications? No?

If you really must know more about my 10/22 and the inherent problems with accuracy feel free to PM me. I will explain it.

Otherwise Id prefer to keep this thread on track.

Your post count is only 36, you need more posts to be considered a shooter, until your post count is up it will be assumed you don't know how to shoot.

Sorry for the hijack, some peoples comments are just too idiotic to keep my fingers quiet.
Good luck with the barrel hunt.

Well I have a Anshutz .22 LR bolt action with a 20 or 22 inch barrel (can't remember) and a 1022 with a stock 10" Ruger Charger barrel and I have noticed both are very accurate at times.

Found the Eley slower fps Target .22 LR loads to be the most accurate and consistant with the faster cheaper ammo being far less accurate. As mentioned here I have no issues with the longer or shorter Ruger barrels at 50 yards when used on golfball sized targets (gopher vital areas) personally I would invest in a trigger job, decent glass/rings, and decent stock before doing barrel upgrade.

But that is just my opinion in regards to 1022s, I do know that you can spend big bucks trying to make a 1022 more accurate when a bolt action like my stock Anshulz with it's non heavy barrel shoots pretty damn accurate. Many factors with slower more expensive ammo being the biggest contributor next to the shooter.

Lots more moving around with a semi when compared to a bolt action.

My .02

I've never blamed any of my guns for my poor marksmanship on occasion. My 2 Anschutz and 3 CZ's perform better than I can. The only 10/22 I have was bought for my Tommy gun project, which has a Dlask barrel. It shot pretty well in stock form. In case you haven't noticed, on the web, everybody has a one hole group.

I would recommend any tensioned barrel. I bought a Butler Creek carbon fiber package, with synthetic stock for my plain 10/22 carbine. Groups went from 6"+ to under 2" at 100m. With the right ammo I can sometimes get under 1 MOA. Personal best was 5/8" (Federal Gold Medal Match @ $10/ !!) super light as well.

As I (eventually) said in PM, I have the KIDD lightweight which I'm quite happy with and will meet all your requirements (1/2" @ 50 yd, all day long)*. While I'm certain there are less expensive options that may shoot as well as the KIDD, there are few options that every sample will shoot that well. In my research on RFC before building my SR-22, there are very few complaints about any of the KIDD products.

*Both my 22LR rifles shoot under 1/2" at 50 yards all day long which is quite surprising considering my post count.

While not 16", this one is close. Green Mountain 17" Heavy Taper. Over on rimfirecentral it's a known good shooting barrel. I find it balances well and in fact I made a 40yd head shot on a grouse less than 3 weeks ago. My chosen ammo (so far have only tested standard velocity) isn't quite MOA, but I was able to get 1/2" groups at 50m with some Remington Target by Eley. CCI Sub-Sonic is a lot cheaper to shoot, though. :)

Necro thread revival. Finally got a barrel that I am very happy with. I never did find a Kidd lightweight barrel. I did however find a Kidd Ultralight barrel. I am still a little confused with the difference. It seems that the ULW has a little less steel in the barrel. They are both the same contour. The way the muzzle is threaded and crowned is beautiful. The crown is recessed about 3/4 of an inch.

Getting a Kidd barrel to fit into a Dlask receiver was a PITA though. I tried not to sand anything down but theres not way they will fit. I got the barrel stuck halfway on the receiver twice. On the last try I had the receiver in the oven at 200F, the barrel in the freezer, and a piece of a 4x4 to be beat the tar out of it. I was pretty relieved when it just barely went in. I don't think I would have gotten it apart the last time. Needless to say its a tight fit. Also I lucked out with getting the extractor to line up. Must have been a quality 4x4 I was using.

Here she is:

Preliminary accuracy tests are very promising. Some quarter sized groups with cheap ammo. Need to get a little more serious in testing it.Theres a marked improvement in accuracy though. The scope is a Vortex Diamondback 2-7 rimfire and it is definitely the weak link now. The crosshairs cover a good quarter inch and the parallax is horrendous.

i had the same problem tring to put a TacSol X-ring barrel into a stock ruger.
ended up beating it so hard the barrel got stuck half way in.
barrel ended up wrecking.

2nd attempt i sent the stuff to Dlask and they put them together for me.

so ya, take what you want from that but it was substantially cheaper to have a gunsmith do it for me.
was the only 10/22 ive ever had a problem with too.
still have nightmares about killing that $280 barrel.

rig looks nice though!
thanks for taking the time to come back in and update us.
always hate when build threads blue ball us and never come in with the finished product.

Nice choice its a very nice barrel . I have the tac sol , magnum research and the older Kidd without the flutes . It's hard to say because each have a different trigger and bolt combo but in my opinion the magnum research is the most accurate by a little. The second is the Kidd . And the tac-sol the least of the bunch . I love the looks of the new Kidd and that it's threaded. I'd like to buy one for my next build .
