Which .17 hmr/scope ?

The .17 hmr bug got me so im now looking at a couple rifles. Im looking at 3 very
similar rifle and I would like to have feedback on how they perform and what
would be the best choice for small game and target shooting.

I would like to put a good rimfire scope for under 300 bucks on it, suggestions ?

Wich one would you pick and why ?

Seen the Savagearms.com Model 93R17BTVS*?
What a magnificently comfortable rifle. *Have yet to shoot mine, still awaiting a scope, but its 4" shorter than my ruger HMR and sure points/holds nice. I love that stock... 465bucks at Wholesale. Not a big fan of the magazine, Ruger wins hands down over anyone there. With a little tweekin on the trigger their 77/17 bolt actions should not be over looked. For a rimfire these are longrange rifles, don't limit them witha fixed 4x like you might a .22. I regularly run upwards of 10x. Go variable.

I love my Savage, blows gophers up real good. Currently sporting a ####ty Marstar scope. I also "shimmed" the trigger to get a lighter break, she fires at about 1lb now.

Not to hijack a good thread, but could you explain? I cut a wee little off the 'big' part of my return spring... doesn't take much and one still has full adjustment to the heavier end. One of my favorite things about Savage.
 
The savage is a very fine rifle for the price. The magazine could be a little better, but a minor complaint. I wouldn't put a rimfire scope on it though. A better choice would be any scope that suits you with variable objective. I've got a cheap bushnell 3-9 power on mine. When looking at a scope, keep in mind you can shoot the 17 from 5 feet away to 200 yds and beyond
 
polishinf and shiming trigger is a must with a savage .17hmr.

i had to sand stock to have a free floating barrel
(dont think its necessary to have a beeding done on a .17hmr)

i also had a lot of imperfections on the bolt, i worked hard to polish it, now it works very well, and the chromed part of the bolt looks like a mirror, its amazing.

i love this little rifle, savage 93r17gv, i just hate the scope. . . .cheap tasco scope.

i tough about a bushnell banner scope 6-24x X 50, i am sure its enough for a .17hmr. turretts are easy to hold even if its not target turetts.
if anyone have a cheap idea for a supersize scope, fell free to give it.

There's a thread at savageshooters that explains how to do the "shimming", it has made a world of difference with this rifle, even if the break is a little light.:cool:

All I have to do is to start thinking about pulling the trigger and well....bang!
 
I was lurking over the net today and found some usefull reviews. Most heavy barelled .17 seems to perform about the same out off the box. Only price tags are higher, ie Ruger M77/17 going for 750 or so.

I'll give a try to the savage I think, mags are cheap, reviews are good.
 
I've got a Marlin 917V....nice gun, too heavy to carry for extended periods of time....I usually find a spot in the gopher patch and set up for a while. Trigger is heavy (Rifle Basix going in soon). For the money, I think it is one of best. Scope is crappy Tasco 6x20-42.....rather spend money on more rifles then glass.....I can upgrade glass when I'm rich!

Just read this interesting thread and figured I should say hi.
just picked up a savage 93r17 btvs and found this bit on what scope to use interesting...I already got some info from this thread..stock up on ammo now
 
It goes pretty quick come spring and summer, the US gets it first then we get the rest. I've got 15 cases (500 rds in a case) so far and stiil buying:eek: . When you start shooting the little 17, its easy to go through a case in a day:D !
If only there were more gophers!

Good grief...how many cases do I need?????:eek:
actualy ...don,t gophers breed like gophers?:D
 
I go out every weekend to the local farms and clear the herds to help them out. With no recoil you can shoot ALL day. And your always going to go for the long shots. Try and peg a gopher at 300 yds!
