Which 20" AR should I look at???

For new one |(that is, closest to C7 in configuration), I think only Armseat brings in 20". There might be a few Sabre left at Wolverines.

I don't think Freedom Venture and Questar brought in Bushmaster and RRA in 20" on a regular basis, but you can ask them. Bushmaster does make a 2o" government barrel - not sure about RRA though

Colt doesn't make a "C7" or government style 20" for a long time - most of the 20" out there are H-bAR.

Honestly? You should just get a Black Special and be done with it...

I mean, it's pretty much the only non-restricted "black" rifle with pleasing aesthetics.

People from the USA can hunt with an R-15, up here it's still Restricted, painting it camo doesn't change whats underneath. I don't understand why people are so hooked on non restricted, I mean how often do you hunt? I shoot paper myself and have a blast doing it, especially with my AR15, it's an expensive range toy and I love it, who cares if you can't walk through a farmers field with it?
Just buy one and you'll see how much fun they can be.

I don't sweat the restrictions either, seeing as I live 2 minutes away from downtown Ottawa with my only options being EOHC and RAC. That and I primarily shoot handguns, so practically all of my shooting occurs at a range. It might be somewhat different for the folks in the central provinces, though...

I live in a semi-rural setting where we often get out to hunt groundhogs and coyotes. I figured the R15 may just feed my need for a AR and Varmit rifle all in one package, but since we cant hunt with any AR's it is outta the question.

I will look into either a Colt or Stag 20" model, please tell me what the diff between a C7 or Gov't style rifle and a Colt H-Bar style. Sorry im a real amateur so my vocab is weak!

So is it safe to say the only 20" platform with a removable handle and flat top brand new here in Canada is the Stag 4R???

Do we have a Armalite dealer in Canada???

I say f**k it, let's all go hunt with our AR's. I know a retired major, he hunts with a C79 clone and bags a deer evry single year. We just need to grow some balls like the major, he says his too old and don't care about our stupid laws. Were all law abyding people here. This blows.

Ok i've been doing some research and I am looking for a M16A4 or C7A1 clone. So I do want it flat top capable if it has a removable handle or not. And I guess they would be more of a sporter weight in the 7.5lb to 8lb range. The only 2 rifles that I can find with these specifics are the Stag Arms 4R and the Armalite M15A4. That being said which one is the better rifle and what is the price difference? Can a handle be bought aftermarket for the Armalite M15A4 so that you have both a flat-top and handle? I cant find any info on the Stag such as weight and overall length, anyone know?? Thanks

I'm not encouraging law breaking, just curious, if you live on a farm in the middle of nowhere, how often do the RC's come to your property to see what your shooting in the homemade backyard range?

I do not encourage law breaking, that was just a rant. My bad. And the only place I shoot is at the local ranges. I would however like to go on a guided yote hunt down south with an R15 if that is even posible for us kanadians.
Ok no more hijacking.

If you're mechanically inclined, I'd suggest buying a stripped lower, lower parts kit and a stock, then buying a complete upper receiver. It's marginally cheaper then buying a new assembled AR and gets you get very familiarized with the workings of your rifle.

The Stag Arms Model 4 is all M16A4 spec but the barrel, which is a heavier .80 DMR/target profile under the handguards. So, it's like the M16, only more accurate. :) There are a number of CF shooters using Stag 20" uppers on their C7 lower for competition purposes. They shoot C77 ball VERY well.

Stag Arms/CMT is a US Dept of Defence approved M16 subcontractor continuously since 1973 (meaning they build the parts and assemblies that are used in Uncle Sams M16). They manufacture M16A4 spec rifles as the primary contractor for foreign military sales.

Arms East has the 4R (and 4L) in stock, with threaded barrel, A2 flash hider, and 556/Wylde Chamber. $1575.

Weight is 8.5lbs.

Which model???

So upon some research there are 4 rifles that meet these standards that I can find, Which one would you pick???

1. Stag 4R
2. Armalite M15-A4
3. Sabre Defense A4
4. Rock River Arms A4

Stag, Armalite and RRA all are around $1500 new while the Sabre is $2000, what makes the Sabre that much better? Should I be looking at a 1:7 twist or a 1:9 twist? Which one is the better $1500 rifle?

Man, quit thinking so hard and just get one! If you don't like it, sell it.

Get what you can, when you can get it. Or keep sitting around playing the waiting game if you have the discipline.

Thanks GT...We always try to stock 20" Bushies, usually in A3 config or flattop with a front sight. They're heavy barrels...

Thanks...

Thanks for all your help guys, I've got some decisions to make. On one hand I wanna buy a Stag or Armalite with a detachable handle for optics, but it would be around $1700 new by the time im done.

On the other hand I am considering a used Colt A2 Target Match H-Bar in good shape, $1000-$1200 and be done with it.

I don't know yet, thanks for all the great info!!

So you're saying Stag Arms builds the parts and manufactures the US M16-A4 under the Colt name for the US military?

No. Just reread my answer, should have said ... 'under their own brand for foreign military sales'...

Colt builds Colts. But Colt doesn't machine all of their parts/components in-house, they use subcontractors, the largest and oldest being Continental Machine Tool, located about 6 miles away, in New Britain, CT. (Largest in 2008 might not be true, I don't know how much Colt Canada now builds vs CMT, I would assume they build quite a lot).

When a primary defence contractor employs a sub-contractor, that sub-contractor and their work must be approved by the Govt. CMT is an authorized and approved Dept of Defense subcontractor for the M4 and M16 programs and have been manufacturing M16/AR15 parts under license, since 1973.

CMT continues to operate as an authorized major subcontractor to the M4 program (parts/refurbs - including M16 to M4 fleet conversions), a lesser subcontractor to the current M16 contractor (AFAIK, bolts, don't know what else, do know that FN makes much more of their own parts than does Colt). They continue to manufacture the M203 under license, and are a growing concern internationally with their own Stag Arms M16, which is manufactured to current M16A4 specs and is approved for US Foreign Military Assistance sales as an M16A4 (they also do the odd run of M16A2 when requested).

When Stag Arms went with the slogan "Worldwide leader in AR15 and M16 Manufacturing", they were not blowing smoke. :)
