I am just wondering what everyone finds to be the most accurate 22 target ammo? I am just curious to find out what my marlin 60 is actually capable of now that I've done trigger and stock work. I know it isn't a target rifle by any means but I would like to see if I can actually get 1/2" groups with it and the best I can do with any ammo I've ever tried is around the 1" group which is lots good enough for any hunting I do.I am probably expecting to much out of her I know but would just like to know if it's the ammo or gun?

Eley would be a good bet. Cci sv (standard velocity). Go check out nordic marksman he has some other match rounds. The good thing about 22 ammo is that the most expensive match stuff runs about cheaper than decent centerfire.

The rifle chooses the ammo... it really is a crapshoot what lot and manufacturer your chamber/barrel will like. CCI SV is a good start- it works ok to great in everything I have tried it in. I would also check Eley club, SK Standard +. Anything that is labelled "target" should be subsonic or borderline (1100fps or below). For accuracy in general the high velocity ammo (like mini-mags) can be good but you will never see someone at a rimfire match shooting it.

Getting accuracy out of a semi is another challenge- can be done but more bits and pieces to work with. Make sure the gun mechanically is good- properly torqued stock screws, good trigger adjustment etc. Give yourself a good baseline so when you look at ammo you know the hardware is good. It is exceedingly rare that a rifle comes out of the box and shoots 50yd bug holes with the first ammo it is fed- most of the impressive stuff you see is from people taking the time to methodically optimize everything together.

Lastly- don't forget about the nut behind the stock.

Lol that's probably the biggest part of it.I have tinkered around with the tourque on the screws and have them set at the best I can get. I also put a mcarbo trigger spring kit in and polished the sear which has helped so much. When I clean I actually take the entire action apart so I know it's cleaned properly and I've free-floated the stock. Out of any ammo I've ever shot CCI minimmags have so far been the most accurate with about a 1" group but I'm thinking with quality ammo it may shoot better.

of the cheaper ammo I have tried cci sv and sk standard+ are about the best. cheaper ammo tends to throw more flies than top end . there is a lot of technique to consistanly shooting sub .5 groups at 50 yrds even tougher is 100 yrs where the wind comes into play. buy a case of sk+ and practice, practice, practice.

I've found the cheaper ammo labelled target is pretty much just lower velocity rounds, nothing special for accuracy. I'd start with cci sv(mostly cause everyone else seems to like it) then sk std then lapua centre x. I have some rws champ edition and it's a bit behind the centre x it seems. Only eley I tried was lower end club or sport and nothing special.
As its a semi I'd also try a box of cci ar tac, promise you'll be surprised.

Careful using sub-sonic ammo with a semi, you may have cycling issues. RWS R-100 or Rifle Match "S" are match grade rounds with a little more zip to them than the standard velocity stuff. SK High Velocity is also capable of shooting ~1/2". Most of my rifles shoot best with one of the SK or Lapua brands, RWS and Eley have only been decent at best.

Buy 100 rounds of everything you can get your hands on, invest in a rim thickness gauge, batch them and pick a really nice day to test them. One of my favourite ways to spend a day!

I agree that the expensive ammo is almost always the most accurate. However, some of the economy rounds available in 500+ boxes, once sorted, come very close for a fraction of the price. I have one rifle that seems to thrive on American Eagle, one of the cheapest brands going!

Enjoy.

Candocad.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Had to go to Canadian tire so thought I would see what they had in stock and they did have some of the CCI standard velocity 22 in stock. Little windy here today but just couldn't resist trying. Providing I'm measuring correctly. Measure group at widest point with micrometer and subtract .220 I got 6 of 8 groups under 3/4" and 4 of them under 1/2".

Nice! Definitely seeing potential there I'd try some SK Standard next. Grech Outdoors in Mt. Forest is near you and last time I was there they had some RWS Club on the shelf.

Thanks rabid. I'm very happy with it. We don't have much of a ammo selection around here but next time I get down to the city I'll deffinatly pick some of them up. By far the best I've shot with that gun.

How much torque to put into the action screws of a stock, non-bedded rifle? Is hand-tight + a bit close enough for 25 yd plinking purposes (Savage Mk. II BTV and FVT), or do I need to be more precise?

Mine seem to like it just a hair over hand tight. Sorry not real precise. I just kept going a hair tighter than shoot 5 over and over till groups started opening more than went back. I should really invest in a tourque driver.

If you were to look at the .22LR ammo used by competition winners, I believe it would boil down to three brands/line: either (1) Eley Tenex, (2) Lapua Midas+ (or possibly X-ACT), or (3) RWS R50. All expensive stuff, but the best with respect to uniformity of all elements of the loaded cartridge.

I found CCI Greentag worked well as a budget match round. It shot nice small groups from a rest, and when I was younger I could keep most inside 50mm offhand at 25m from the pistol. Most other non-match-grade ammo opened up a bit vertically.

Outside lubed uncoated lead at 1050 fps. And It's not going to work very long in a reliable self loading manner, with about 99% semi auto rimfire rifles/pistols IMHO. Same story with otherwise very accurate SK Rifle Match too.
SK Pistol Match (Special) loaded to a slightly higher velocity. It's designed to be more reliable in semi auto match pistols.

my 2 bits

Edit: I have absolutely no doubt that Eley red box or black box would outshoot most these other choices. But neither of them are designed for anything other than match bolt action rifles and match single shot pistols.
And Eley of this quality, will cost mucho pesos compared to most SK.
