Hey guys,

I'm all ready to go here (actually, almost... waiting for the ATT) and most people tell me I should get started with a .22 - cheap ammo and gets you to shoot properly.
So I'm looking for a nice.22 gun, but not sure what to go with. At the range, during the safety course, I shot a Ruger Mark III and some revolver, but both felt a bit off... not sure why.

Do you guys have any suggestions on a decent .22 to get? What do you think of the Beretta Neos?

Thanks,
Bruno.

Hello Bruno,

I started with a Browning lever rifle, BLR22, and a SIG Mosquito. Affordable to use and fun.

No problems with the rifle, but, the normal bugs with the Mosquito. I found that using clean ammunition helped a lot.

I have the baretta neos its an awesome 22lr , you need to give it a clean after 200-250 rounds or you get occasional jamb easy to clean. love the looks and feel ,hate the slide release.:)

The S&W 41 looks nice, but it's over $800. I'll have to go to a gun shop and feel a few out as Applefarmer suggested. I was hoping for something a bit cheaper as I don't know for how long shooting a .22 will be that much fun :-(

Thanks guys.

30 years plus, still shooting a .22 and having fun, not sure it ever gets old. $800 now and in thirty years you'll still have it and having fun.

check out the EE Ruger MK2's with the bull barrel come up for around $300

Which 22

Unfortunatly most 22LR rifles produced today are garbage. They fail to fire, fail to extract, and fail to eject. If you can get them to function they generaly are accurate. There are only two makes I would consider and that is a high dollar Weatherby ten twentytwo or any 22LR manufactured by CZ arms. These two makes are at the top of the heap for accuracy and functionality. You will not be disappointed with either one.

Hey, I'm looking at what to get as a first firearm, and I've bounced between a few ideas. I want something fun to shoot, something I can teach friends with, and reasonably priced for the gun+ammo. I was initially going to get a CZ-858, but I think I've decided to hold off on that for a while. I'm now bouncing the idea of a .22, and SKS, or both.
I was looking at the guns in this thread on the EE, and the 10/22 target looks great, but I want to know if it's worth the price? I want something that will last, but is it really worth the $429 for the fancy stock, and whatever else comes on the target?

Lever arms sells the SKS with case of ammo for $350, and i am considering that too.

What do you guys think is wise for a first purchase? I also want a shotgun in the near future, looking to spend less than $400.

Guys he looking for handgun not rifle, you can find neos used $350 you will be happy with it.

I read some good things about the Neos and the price is right :) but I would like to hold one to see how it feels, so I may have to take a trip to the gun store.

I'm not too interested in rifles right now... although for rifles I hear a lot about the SKS (cheap rifle and ammo). Maybe in a few months. I already have more than 1 handgun in mind for down the road.

Thanks for all the great info guys.

your best buy would be ruger mklll. cheap, accurate, lots of parts available, not pecky on ammo, you might have little trouble figuring the reassembly at first, but once well understood it's an easy trick.

If you can find a used Ruger Mk II there are lots of after market grips that totaly change the feel of the gun in your hand. For about the same money the Buckmark in different configurations comes with some really nice grips with finger grooves and such. well balanced and good to shoot.

Hey, the Buckmark 22 looks interesting.

I wish I could actually try shooting one before buying it! I shot the Ruger MK II or III during my safety training and it was fun. It's not a very good looking gun (it doesn't have to be) but everyone says you can shoot that for a long time without any issues.

For the price you can't go wrong with Ruger or the Buckmark. I have shot Mark II's for years and now have a Mark III as well. A friend has a Buckmark and it shoots very well and feels good in the hand.
