which 22?

Hey guys I was considering buying a new .22 for rabbit hunting, i currently have a cooey single shot and sometimes you just need that second shot when an animal is running. My question is which to buy? I was considering a Remington 597 . I prefer a semi auto. any opinions would be appreciated thanks!
 
Ruger 10/22. The amount of after market parts are endless. If you buy a used one at a decent price and you don't like it you can easily get you're money back as a lot of people like them. Before you buy the 597 read some reviews on both the 10/22 and the 597 and decide for yourself.

if you want absolute accuracy and great factroy sights, buy a Thompson center r-55 all weather with fibre optic sights, can't go wrong, then buy only cci minimags for it, and rabbits will fall.

You can pretty much pick and choose between new, old, tactical, heavy or lightweight. More colour choices than the car lot, and almost as many aftermarket accessories.

Mine is almost bone stock, bare bones, regular ol' 10/22. Looks like hell, shoots like heck.

Buy what pleases you.

At the risk of being seriously flamed, I bought a 597. I like it, had an interesting time get it sighted but it works fine for me. I know that people have had trouble and it lacks the accessories that the 10/22 has but I wasn't looking at buying accessories, I was looking at buying a firearm. That had a magazine unlike my dads cooey.
 
Nothing better then a Ruger 10/22 for a good general purpose hunting and plinking gun if your looking for really good accuracy go for a marlin bolt action with a heavy barrel there pretty good but not as affordable.
 
Remington 597 in 22 or better in 22mag - most accurate semi auto on the market in its price range. There are less aftermarket parts just because no one needs them, there is nothing to fix on out of the box 597. Great gun
 
Marlin 60, if 14 rounds in the mag tube is enough for you. No need to spend on aftermarket parts to make it accurate, no magazines to misplace, no need to buy extra magazines. Out of the box, it competes with my Savage MKIIF and CZ 452s for accuracy (but hasn't won yet, quite close though). Likes cheap bulk Winchester Dynapoints and can shoot 1.5 inch groups at 100 meters on a good day, topped with a cheap Nikko 4-32 scope.
 
thanks guys, this ruger 10/22 seems t be pretty popular, i was interested in the Remington 597 with scope combo i think its 229$ at cabalas, not the vtr but just a plain hunting rifle, want something light because i do a lot of hunting in thick bush, i was just wondering does anybody have any experince with these? does it jam alot thats my only fear with a semi

My experience is that the 597 jams fairly regularly. I bought one and sold it after 6 weeks of frustration. They have an ammo preference. My friend's 597 also jams. I have a 31 year old 10/22. It NEVER jams. It is accurate to 1" groups at 100 m. There are lots of aftermarket customisation parts on the shelf at gun shops. It will eat any ammo. What else can you possibly want from a .22 semi???

Go with a marlin 795 if you want clip fed, or model 60 if you want tube fed. These are the most accurate out of the box semi .22 that I have ever used. They are about the best buy out there in my opinion.
 
I think anyone recomending a 10/22 should also give the disclaimer that they are sold with inferior barrels and other parts on purpose to force you to buy aftermarket parts.
Why would anyone want to support a company that does this? Unless you just want a reason to tinker around with it then go for it I guess, if you just want a gun that shoots out of the box get a marlin.
 
Be careful of the 10/22 praises. Some folks have to develop attachments to it because of the amount of time and parts put in to them. Perfect if you want to play lego with them and make it your own. Of course, it's hard to argue against 30 round magazines. Just a fore warning, if you do go down the lego path, be prepared to spend money. It becomes a money sink, but you'll get the gun you want and something to be proud of. You may, ironically, find that you could have purchased the rifle you wanted for cheaper than the 10/22 you put together.

For a light, reliable, affordable, and accurate out the box .22lr, get the Marlin 795 or Marlin 60. No "Hi-Cap" magazines, tactical stocks, or SS match barrels. They're meant to be practical workhorses out the box. Savage 64s are also nice in that regard.

For a damn fine bolt repeater all around, get the CZ45x's.
 
Ruger 10/22 has gotta be the best! there are so many accessories made for it as well so you can totally customize it for cheap if you want to!
