Thinking of a decent .22lr pistol for under one thousand. Thinking of an IZH-35M or even a Ruger Mark 111 Hunter (or 22/45 Hunter) in mind.
If I buy the the Izhmash I can use it for competition if I choose and if the Rugers then just for plinking and informal target shooting.

Q: The length of barrel on the hunters; will it make any difference at 50 yards? I am partial to the 4 1/2" barreled hunters as opposed to anything longer. Actually the standard thin barrels are just as accurate I believe.
A Walther GSP Expert would be nice but at $2,000 it is a bit pricey.
I do not even know where the IZH-35M or Walther can be purchased. Anyone know?

Heres my MKIII Hunter 6 7/8 that I picked up in the EE for a good deal. I picked up a Burris Fastfire and a dovetail mount to get rid of the unnecessarily long Ruger rail and then decided to take off the front sight aswell so I can pretend I have a integral silenced pistola. :D

I have 5 magazines and a ultimate clip loader and its my favorite plinker. With prices these days it really helps keeping shooting cheap.

Go with the MKIII not the 22/45.
The 22/45 grip is not that great, and lots of good target grips are available for the MKIII

Scotty, how do you like that firefast?

I'm thinking about getting one for my 10-22.

On topic, ruger makes a "short hunter" which is a 4.5" stainless/fluted barrel with adjustable sights. I'm drooling over it, and it's on my short list.

I like the longer barrel, but I would have not minded getting the shorter. I do not like the 22/45 at all. I don't see how they can say that it feels like a 1911. I see no comparison at all.

Accuracy is great and the fast fire is great. Quick target acquisition, good battery life, easy to find dot which adjust to brighter or dimmer as per the brightness outside. A+ on that front.

I have the in between 5 1/2" Bull Barrel Mark III. Very good pistol so far...approaching 1000 round mark. Have a set of hogue grips on the way.

P&D has a good stock of Rugers.

That's the one to get. The 5 1/2 " bull barrel Mark III in Stainless. I have the blued version. I prefer the stainless version though. If you're doing informal target/plinking/metal target shooting this is the best all around.
You lose a very tiny bit of accuracy due to the shorter sight picture of the 5 1/2 compared to the 6 7/8 barrel on the Hunter. But overall it's more fun.

I also have a Hunter MKIII which I really like. However I don't like the V-notch and front fibre optic sight. I had them replaced for regular target partridge style sights. This made a very big and positive difference.

That being said I shoot the shorter target model a lot more than I shoot the Hunter.

I hated them to when I got them. Good thing I never had to shoot it with them on! I picked up the FastFire from LeBaron the next day and my dovetail mount came from Wolverine 2 weeks later. Now its my favorite plinker and only 22 handgun. I dunno why I waited so long. The ultimate clip loader really helps with loading 5 mags up and I can go through a 500 rounds in about a half an hour shooting with two other friends. Cant beat 550 rounds of Federal Chamption for $17

With CCI Stingers this thing is a freaking lazer beam at 50 yards and with the slower bullets I love being able to see the bullet flying towards the target.
I need to get out and re-zero the red dot with the lower rear-sight mount as it seemed to have shifted left and down alot.

If you can find one, the Ruger Mk. II Target model with the 6 7/8" taper barrel is a really sweet plinker/informal target gun. FWIW.

There are many beautiful and very accurate pistols for all kinds of budget.
Buckmarks are good,
S&W's are good,
IZH35 - I am chasing that one for a decent price and cannot find - all are in good use,
Walther P22 is not a target gun at all but great fun plinker,
Rugers are ugly as sin but group nicely in skilled hands,
Chinese cantremember norinco something for 150$ are just as ugly but very accurate and have nice sharp sights

I would go with heavy-barreled Buckmarks these are the only guns I ever shot dollar-sized groups at 20 yards ever. there is something in their trigger, sights, grip etc that goes well in my hands. Maybe it will work for you too.

Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder:cheers: I think the Rugers look better than all other .22 pistols...and they shoot great too.

I can't stand buckmarks. I don't like the looks of them, and disliked them even more once I discovered you have to replace a buffer after a while. Unacceptable.
