I was wondering which ammo would run reliable in a stock 10/22. It is a carbine, beech stock, metal butt plate, 18.5" barrel?

Background is, a friend and I took the kids out plinking the other day and he had bought his son the above mentioned gun. He had some Remington Thunderbolts and it had 3-4 FTEs on every 10 round mag. I had him try my CCI Standard and Federal 525 but it only improved marginal. The rifle was new and cleaned prior to shooting and appeared in good working order (it was not dry/wet though).

So what ammo does fire/cycle/eject reliable in your 10/22 carbine? Thanks for the feedback.

I've tried the Thunderbolts, thought it maybe a bad batch, and they ran nice through my gun.

But then, CCI Standards and Federal 525s did not really improve the situation.

Is it a new rifle? Mine took a few hundred rounds of high velocity ammo to start to run reliably. The only time I have an issue now is if it's something like the bullet is bent and almost out of the case (winchester white box is crap)

For fte you may consider either filing a bit of a hook on the extractor (see you tube) or upgrading with an aftermarket extractor from DLASK.

I agree. Since I put in a Kidd extractor my two 10/22's, they function pretty well 100% with CCI Blazer, Federal bulk 525, Winchester bulk 222/555 packs, and Remington Bucket of bullets. Havent' tried Thunderbolts. Best $20 I spent was the Kidd extractor (got it from Dlask as well). Super easy install ....anyone can do it.

Federal 525 Value packs are all I buy for mine, it likes them in both terms of feeding reliably and acceptable accuracy. only upgrades it has is a bolt buffer and a home done trigger job.

Winchester Wildcats have worked well for me. They are a little hard to find these days though. If you want to spend a little more, CCI Velocitors work too.

Mine is used in our Speed Steel events and in over a year there was only one FTF/FTE.
Probably not able to evaluate due to the speed of the event . . . just clear and continue.
Usually run a mix of American Eagle, Blazer, MiniMags RN and Thunderbolts.
The MiniMags are used so the advancement of the rounds in the loader can be tracked . . . maybe 5-10%.
With a red dot sight accuracy is about equal with everything and runs about 1" at 25 yards.
It has been taken apart once to clean and for whatever reason the barrel could not be removed.

Stock ruger 10/22 target model shoots amazingly well with Eley Force. It's a little more expensive but to shoot that well I don't mind. They can actually be a little dirty so expect to clean more often. Mini mags are a close 2nd but always seem to produce a flyer or 2 in 5 shot group. It was driving me crazy making me wonder if it was me or what. Then I took a chance on a little more expensive ammo and it became abundantly clear it is the ammo.

Two causes of inaccuracy is:
1) The nut that holds the gun, and
2) The jerk that pulls the trigger!

It is a poor archer that blames the arrow, the golfer than blames the pencil, Rosie for blaming the spoon . . .

I just tried out a new sr22 and it didn't want to feed the first round, the rest of the mag fed fine though, was using the golden bucket ammo
Had to stop shooting when my vortex diamondback scope crapped out. Bought the scope used and it didn't even make a mag of shooting! There was a quarter sized piece of glass that got dislodged inside and was rattling around.
